Kinsley, Lopez prevail in runoffs

Kinsley, a retired Marine Corps sergeant major working as the Marine Military Academy’s alumni relations director, won 600 votes to defeat Uribe, who drew 472 votes. I hope I can make some kind of good impact.”To get out the vote, Kinsley said he focused on “traditional” campaigning. A native of Dushore, Penn., Kinsley served 29 years of active duty with the Marines, including work on support groups in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In Harlingen, he has served as past president of the Harlingen Veterans Advisory Board and past president of Keep Harlingen Beautiful. After the 2019 election, Uribe began working closely with then-newly elected Commissioner Frank Puente, often voting against the commission’s majority.

2 Harlingen City Commission seats at stake Tuesday

HARLINGEN — Voters go to the polls Tuesday to decide two City Commission races in one of the city’s hottest, most heavily funded runoff elections, which could shift the board’s balance of power. Meanwhile, J.J. Gonzalez, a real estate broker who served on the commission from 2000 to 2006, fell short of the runoff with 374 votes. District 2In the District 2 contest, Daniel Lopez, an attorney who serves as the Cameron County Commissioners Court’s litigation counsel, faces Ernesto Cisneros, a retired U.S. Border Patrol agent. Texas Supreme Court dismisses Harlingen map lawsuit

HARLINGEN — The Texas Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit charging the city’s new single-member district boundaries unconstitutionally moved thousands of District 2 registered voters into District 3, denying their right to vote for commissioner in the May election. “Obviously, we are disappointed with the Supreme Court’s decision and do not agree with it,” Uhlhorn, Meade and their wives stated. “We suspect the court felt there was just too little time to decide such an important voting rights issue. “The justices of the Texas Supreme Court decided this morning that they will not get involved in the dispute regarding district boundaries for Harlingen city commissioners including the May 7 election of commissioners for Districts 1 and 2,” they stated. “Because of those differences, we were hopeful that the justices on the Supreme Court would be willing to intervene and protect our constitutional right to vote,” they argued.

Lawsuit seeks to void Harlingen’s new district map

On Wednesday, Puente stood by the city’s new single-member district boundary lines, arguing the courts have ruled such plans constitutional. In their statement, they accuse Uribe, Puente and Perez of redrawing the city’s district map’s boundaries to expand their voter base. It happens every 10 years all over the country after a Census is conducted.”Meanwhile, Mayor Chris Boswell said he supports arguments made by Uhlhorn, Meade and their wives. “As I understand it, the relief being sought is to restore the right of disenfranchised voters in the district,” he said. “Of course, I support that position.”In their lawsuit, Uhlhorn, Meade and their wives argue Uribe, Puente and Perez denied them their right vote based on the City Charter and the city’s redistricting plan.

Harlingen city leaders question new district map’s effect

HARLINGEN — City leaders are questioning whether the redrawing of Harlingen’s five single-member districts’ lines could change the balance of power on the City Commission. However, Mayor Chris Boswell downplayed the role the new district boundaries will play on the commission’s makeup. “There’s a notion that all the people moved from District 3 to District 2 are affluent, upscale voters,” he said. Since a previous commission drew up the city’s original single-member district map in 2008, District 2’s upscale area spawned candidates who dominated some elections, Puente said. In his proposal, Rios described each district’s “ideal” population as totaling 14,366 based on the new Census that set the city’s population at 71,829.

Split Harlingen city commission draws new district map

Earlier this week, Commissioners Richard Uribe, Frank Puente and Rene Perez voted to redraw the district map while shifting much of District 2’s upscale bloc into District 3, which includes the Treasure Hills area. On Thursday, Puente said shifting the affluent bloc out of District 2’s working-class area makes District 3’s demographics more uniform. “It’s more fair representation,” he said, referring to the new district map during an interview. Original map proposalThe law calls on commissioners to realign boundaries to try to balance the five districts’ population numbers. During the last 10 years, growth also swept across District 3, which numbered 14,757 residents, and District 1, with 14,135 residents.

Ultimately, my effectiveness as a Trustee will be evaluated by how much we are able to diminish economic insecurities and increase the college going rates in D2. I have an opportunity to continue the fight on poverty in district 2 for at least 5 more months. As I mentioned earlier, things do not change quickly, and eight months certainly left me in a tough spot.
