SAN ANTONIO – Though former attorney Mark Benavides is serving an 80-year prison term for trading his legal services for sex, his case is still under review by the Bexar County District Attorney’s office. According to testimony during his trial, Benavides would trade his legal representation for sex from at least six clients. It has been almost a year since a moratorium on jury service was ordered due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Ad“It takes all parties,” Gonzales said. “It takes the willingness of defense attorneys, the willingness of the accused and the willingness of courts to work with us.”Another issue Gonzales said he must deal with is contacting victims.

Bexar County District Attorney’s Office establishes additional information dashboards on its website

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales announced Friday that his office has added two new dashboards to its website. The DA’s office website now includes information on cases in the Central Trial Division that involve serious felonies and magistrate cases. “What I’ve done is created these dashboards in an effort to be more transparent to the public,” Gonzales said. “This is, for lack of a better way to put it, our progress report.”Gonzales is midway through his first term as District Attorney. Late last year, Gonzales created the first dashboards dealing with family violence cases and the cite-and-release program involving low-level drug offenses.

21-year-old woman indicted for intoxication manslaughter after head-on crash that killed driver in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County Grand Jury has indicted a woman who San Antonio police say drove her Mercedes Benz sedan head-on into an SUV, killing the driver, in May. Mariana Campos-Jimenez, now 21 years old, has been formally charged with intoxication manslaughter, the District Attorney’s office announced on Friday. The first count of the indictment states that the woman drove while she was intoxicated, causing the death of Gabriel Gallegos, 44, according to the DA’s office. The second count states that she drove the wrong way and failed to avoid hitting Gallegos’s SUV. The DA’s office said the case is pending in the 175th District Court.

San Antonio – Looking back at his first year as the Bexar County District Attorney, Joe Gonzales said that after he won the 2018 election, he knew that he was facing a big job. “We knew that we were going to have to hit the ground running,” Gonzales said Friday. “One of my concerns was bringing criminal justice reform to Bexar County, and I believe that we’re doing that,” he said. Gonzales’ office records indicate that the number of cases is 1,166. Several high-profile criminal cases set to be tried in San Antonio in early 2020During his campaign, Gonzales promised that addressing family violence cases would be among his priorities.

DA rejects perjury charges against Pct. 2 deputy constable

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County District Attorney’s office on Wednesday announced it will not prosecute the aggravated perjury case against a Bexar County Precinct 2 deputy constable. Online court records show that Moreno was released from jail and that the District Attorney's Office rejected the charge. Christian Henricksen, the chief of litigation for the District Attorney's Office, said that based on the information in the warrant, prosecutors did not feel comfortable moving forward. "The District Attorney’s Office will reconsider prosecution if sufficient evidence is presented at a later date." According to KSAT records, Moreno and Barrientes-Vela have been involved in a series of tumultuous events within the past two years.
