Gun, drugs found inside stolen truck after chase, DPS troopers say

33-year-old man taken into custody after 40-minute chase

SAN ANTONIO – A man who had several outstanding felony warrants faces more charges after leading law enforcement officers on a long, winding chase Wednesday morning, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman said.

"We had a DPS trooper who attempted to initiate a traffic stop for several traffic violations on a vehicle," said DPS Lt. Jason Reyes.

Reyes said a trooper initially noticed the driver and his truck around 8 a.m. Wednesday on Highway 16 in Atascosa County.

The man led troopers, Bexar County sheriff's deputies and deputy constables on a chase that lasted about 40 minutes and extended into Southwest Bexar County.

The vehicle chase ended when the driver jumped out of his truck and ran into a wooded area off Ray Ellison Boulevard just outside Loop 410.

"He just bailed out of his car," said Sylvia Compian, who was leaving a nearby Walmart at the time. "The (officer) followed us home and told us to go in the house, quick."

Compian said the last thing she expected to see while running errands was a man running from officers.

"Scared. And I just locked the doors and made sure everybody was safe," she said.

With a San Antonio Police Department helicopter overhead, troopers and deputies on the ground were able to locate the suspect. They took the man into custody just down the street from Compian's home.

Troopers said running from officers is only the beginning of trouble for the driver.

"There was a weapon located inside the vehicle, narcotics located inside the vehicle and the vehicle was stolen," Reyes said.

Along with the outstanding warrants, the suspect faces charges related to drug and weapons possession and evading arrest.
