SAN ANTONIO – A Kendall County sheriff's deputy who was killed in the line of duty was remembered Thursday for his smile, love of family and love of law enforcement.
Family, friends and fellow members of the law enforcement community crowded into Oak Hills Church in San Antonio to remember the life of 32-year-old Deputy Carlos Ramirez.
The deputy was hit and killed by a vehicle July 2 while conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 10 at mile marker 533.
The fallen deputy was known around the Sheriff's Office as "Smiley" for his infectious smile and dimple. His Texas National Guard buddies called him "Deputy Delicious."
"You couldn't be mad at him because he always so upbeat and his smile," said the Rev. Jason Brown, chaplain of the Boerne Police Department.
Brown said Ramirez loved being a deputy so much that he never missed a day and was never late for his shift since joining the Sheriff's Office in December 2016.
"He wore the badge with honor and pride," Brown said.
Ramirez, who was born in Juarez, Mexico, served in the U.S. Army for four years, including a tour of service in Iraq.
The fallen deputy's wife, Jessica, told Brown, "Even when he was gone, he always called home."
Jessica Ramirez also wanted for Brown to deliver a message to the man who was driving the vehicle that hit and killed her husband.
"I want him to know that I am not angry at him, accidents happen," Brown said.
Graveside services and interment will be held Tuesday at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso.
Ramirez leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.
