Flashy car leads police to identity theft suspect

Turk Lemes, 34, charged with fraud

SAN ANTONIO – Turk Lemes, 34, has been arrested in connection with an identity theft case that San Antonio police said involved multiple victims.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, officers stumbled upon the evidence while following up on a single case of mail theft.

The affidavit stated that a would-be victim reported to police in April that he had chased down and stopped a man who had stolen mail that belonged to him and his neighbor. He also provided officers with a description of the getaway car, a four-door Hyundai with chrome rims and a Spurs license plate.

At some point later, an officer spotted the car at an East Side motel, then saw Lemes coming out of a room, the affidavit stated.

Upon searching the room, police found numerous items belonging to other people, including credit cards, tax forms, checks and driver's licenses, the affidavit stated. Police believe he was using the items to steal other people's identities.

The affidavit stated that police also seized illegal drugs, believed to be methamphetamines, from the room and detained two women who were there.

Lemes was arrested at that time on several outstanding warrants. A charge of fraudulent use of identifying information was filed against him Thursday.
