SA elementary school makes top ten list of healthiest schools in America

Colonial Hills Elementary School, 2 Rio Grande Valley schools make list

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio elementary school was named one of the healthiest schools in the nation, along with two other schools in the Rio Grande Valley.

Colonial Hills Elementary School is listed as the seventh-healthiest school in America, according to healthiergeneration.org.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation released a list of 323 schools across America in order to recognize their efforts to empower kids to develop healthy lifelong habits.

“Our children spend the majority of their day at school. What happens there has a major impact on their health and well-being,” said president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Richard Besser.

Marcell Elementary School in Mission came in eighth, and Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in McAllen came in tenth.

According to the Healthier Generation website, all recognized schools:

  • Meet or exceed federal nutrition standards for school meals and snacks
  • Offer breakfast daily
  • Implement district wellness policies and update progress annually
  • Provide students with at least 60 minutes of physical education per week and ensure physical activity throughout the school day
