Film documents history of Underground Railroad in South Texas
EDINBURG, Texas – A little known chapter of Civil War history makes for a dramatic story told in “Just a Ferry Ride to Freedom,” a documentary produced by the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. The film is based on the choice made by runaway slaves prior to the Civil War, to head south instead of north, to Mexico using another Underground Railroad. The route to freedom would be longer over treacherous terrain between the Nueces and Rio Grande Rivers. Instead, she relied on oral histories with the descendants of those who helped or decided to stay in South Texas, many of whom are now buried in the Rio Grande Valley. 'The Croods: A New Age' tallies highest box office opening since the pandemic began
"The Croods: A New Age" stunned at the box office this weekend, hauling in the biggest opening of any film released during the pandemic. There was some skepticism about how well "The Croods: A New Age" could perform over the Thanksgiving weekend. Instead, the film drew the biggest box office opening since Disney's "Onward" was released in March prior to nationwide lockdowns. As it stands, despite a strong showing from "The Croods" sequel, it is very likely that the 2020 Thanksgiving box office will be the worst in decades. The furthest recorded Thanksgiving box office in Comscore's database is in 1984 when the five-day weekend garnered $46.8 million.cnbc.com
