The pandemic put a strain on many this past year, including non-profit organization Rosie's Gracious Heart. The non-profit serves the southside of San Antonioโs special needs community by providing food, clothing, hygiene, and school supplies when there is a need.

House Resolution 86 mentions several contributions made to the local community by Monterrosa, including her effort โto be a positive role model and a source of encouragement to others,โ creating a group โto empower, support, and educate women in an environment of mutual respect and acceptanceโ and promoting literacy among young people.
Women empowerment group kicks off monthly meetings on South Side
What started out as celebration for International Womenโs Day last year before Covid hit, has now become the first womenโs group on the Southside of San Antonio. AdThe group originally began on Facebook to connect women in the South San Antonio area for networking and new friendships. โI started the group for women who didnโt have friends to hang out with or get business advice from. Wonderfully Wise Women (WWW) is a female empowerment group that is about supporting women of all ages, races, sizes, styles, and sexual preference for personal growth and networking for business. AdThe Arbol de la Vida: Memorias Y Voces de la Tierra sculpture was commissioned by the San Antonio River Foundation. The Mission Espada was established in 1690 and is the southern-most mission of the 4 missions of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan Capistrano and Mission Espada). About Arbol de la Vida: Memorias Y Voces de la Tierra FundingThe sculpture was commissioned by the San Antonio River Foundation. Additional funding for the sculpture project came from the San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture and the San Antonio Parks & Recreation Department.

SAN ANTONIO โ From people making a difference to places to visit, Live from the Southside Magazine is all about highlighting a community that doesnโt normally get that recognition. โOwning my own publication was a childhood dream,โ editor-in-chief of Live from the Southside Magazine April Monterrosa said. Bella Cortez, April Monterrosa and Ruby Cortez share the same passion for writing and entrepreneurship. One of them just launched a book recently.โAdThe magazine does have four children writers, contributing articles, including Bella Cortez. South Side gets โLittle Librariesโ thanks to Scooby Van of San Antonio, Southside ISD, and community businesses
Southside Independent School District, community businesses, and the Scooby Van of San Antonio are providing โLittle Librariesโ to rural areas on the South Side. The Southside ISD Career & Technical Education students installed six little libraries on the grounds of local businesses in their neighborhoods. Community members are also encouraged to donate books to the little libraries at any of the locations. The Scooby Van of San Antonio is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that promotes literacy & creates excitement about reading, bringing communities together through literacy. Southside ISD Career & Technical Education students installed six little libraries at local South Side businesses.

Here are some cool spots on the Southside of San Antonio worth checking out. The City of San Antonio was established in May 1718, when Father Antonio de Olivares and a group of Payaya Indians, built The Alamo Mission (originally known as the Mission San Antonio de Valero) and the Spanish fort known as Presidio San Antonio de Bexar. South Side San Antonio was promoted as a township in 1916. A 3.2-acre landscaped pathway, opened in March 2018, that connects the 4 San Antonio Missions and also features a site-wide water catchment system. Mission Espada was established in East Texas in 1690, Mission Concepcion and Mission San Juan were both set up in East Texas in 1716 and Mission San Jose was set up in San Antonio in 1720.
Maximoโs Grill food truck opens in honor of ownerโs late friend
David Fernandez has dedicated his food truck in his friend's memory by naming the food truck Maximoโs Grill and incorporating his image into the logo. Max Escobedo was a well-known member of the South San community as a beloved son, brother, friend, and coach. Prior to his death, Max had expressed his desire to own a food truck and even worked a few food trucks prior to his passing. Fernandez dedicated the truck in memory of Max by naming the food truck Maximoโs Grill and incorporating his image into the logo. โThe idea is to have a place for local food trucks to sell their food,โ he shared.
Bella Cortez, an 11-year-old entrepreneur from San Antonioโs South Side, publishes first book
Meet the South Sideโs 11-year-old entrepreneur, Bella Cortez. She is the co-owner of the Crafty Cortez Sisters, a crafts and accessory business that she started with her younger sister, Ruby this past August. AdThe Crafty Cortez Sisters became the first kid-owned business from the South Side to sell at The Magik Theatre. Approximately 20 years ago, Jimenez was the original owner of Tacos Jimenez food truck and has now handed down the torch to his son, Leonardo Jimenez III. On January 7, Tacos Jimenez is coming to the South Side of San Antonio, Texas. Tacos Jimenez will specialize in traditional Mexican food from Monterrey as a tribute to his mother Adela Jimenez who has roots there. Miss Plus San Antonio wins Miss Plus Texas, advances to nationals
Southside born and raised and Miss Plus San Antonio 2020 Peopleโs Choice winner Melissa Torres has been selected to represent the great state of Texas and the plus-size community by competing in the national pageant Miss Plus America taking place in Louisville, Kentucky on March 27. AdOut of the 10 largest cities in Texas, and over 40 ladies competing, Melissa was chosen to represent Texas. Roxanne Quintero, founder and pageant director for Miss Plus San Antonio, called on San Antonio residents to join in โcongratulating, supporting, and wishing her all the luck in the world to bring that title home.โAdโI am honored that Melissa has been selected for such an amazing competition and will also be representing our organization and the mission of Miss Plus San Antonio,โ Quintero said. The San Antonio Street Art Initiative is a nonprofit charity that supports artists through career development programming and economic development through community beautification projects. Arriving on the scene in November 2018, The San Antonio Street Art Initiative (SASAI) manages a vibrant schedule of producing exciting mural art that represents unparalleled quality and memorable experiences. Endearingly titled โWe Love Our Southsideโ, this colorful mural is the first of others to launch as part of San Antonio Street Art Initiativeโs Southside Mural Project. โIt has been such a joy to contribute mural art to San Antonio, especially with a contemporary twist. Scooby Doo Van of San Antonio launches South Side chapter with free โlittle librariesโ
The local nonprofit Scooby Van of San Antonio has expanded with a South Side chapter to influence more reading and connect children in the community with learning opportunities and events. Broosterโs Backyard Icehouse (815 Pleasanton Rd, San Antonio, TX 78214) will be the book drop off station and the first Scooby Van โLittle Libraryโ station. Join the Southside Chapter of the Scooby Van of San Antonio to celebrate the launch of the Little Free Library at Broosterโs Backyard Icehouse on Saturday, December 26, 2020, at 4pm โ 7pm, there will also be free books and Scooby snacks for the kids. This is the first of many Little Free Library launches in the Southside community sponsored by the Scooby Van of San Antonio. Live From the Southside magazine and KSAT.com have formed a content-sharing partnership in an effort to elevate community voices and news coverage of the South Side. โThis partnership is going to be so great for my Southside community! Itโs also overwhelming to see my childhood dream come to life and being the first Latina to launch a publication in my own Southside community,โ said April Monterrosa, editor-in-chief and founder of the magazine. โI have worked really hard to utilize my influence and Live from the Southside magazine to bring awareness to all the positive things happening in my community, our Southside culture, and all the wonderful people doing and creating amazing things. โOur partnership with Southside Magazine gives us a new way to reach folks who live, work, and raise their families on the south side of San Antonio.
