VOLLEYBALL HIGHLIGHTS: Reagan sweeps Oโ€™Connor; Harlan, Lanier earn comeback victories

The first Tuesday night of the high school volleyball season featured some thrilling non-district matchups, as Reagan swept O'Connor, Clark knocked off Alamo Heights, Harlan came from behind to defeat Johnson, Lanier held off St. Mary's Hall and Jefferson battled John Jay.

This Olympic volleyball duo went undefeated through the Athens and Beijing games. Hereโ€™s what theyโ€™re doing now.

Two Brandeis volleyball players are best friends and TCU bound together

Brandeis High School juniors Carlee Pharris and Jalyn Gibson have been best friends since they were 11 years old. The two dreamed of playing college volleyball together, and soon that will come true for the class of 2022 TCU commits. โ€œTheyโ€™re great leaders for being young players,โ€ said Williams. โ€œTheyโ€™re best friends. They have a good team chemistry within themselves, and with the others.โ€Imagine playing volleyball and getting to set up your best friend for a point.

SAISD to phase athletics back in after COVID-19 delay

According to the district, team practices will officially begin only for varsity teams in football, volleyball, cross country and tennis on Oct. 12. These dates are subject to change if COVID-19 conditions head in a negative direction, district officials said. A district spokesperson said updated schedules for fall sports will be posted on the SAISD website early next week. All other teams below varsity will remain in the strength and conditioning phase until further notice. The Young Menโ€™s Leadership Academy (YMLA) will only play two varsity football games since they are a 4A school.

Brandeis volleyball sweeps District 28-6A rival Clark in season opener

SAN ANTONIO โ€“ The Brandeis Broncos and Clark Cougars volleyball programs met in the season opener Saturday at Northside Gym. The Broncos swept the Cougars in the best-of-five series with scores of 25-22, 31-29 and 25-18. TCU commit and junior Brandeis outside hitter, Jalyn Gibson, led all hitters with 20 kills while senior defensive specialist, Amy DeWalt, who will be attending Midwestern State in the fall, contributed 32 digs. The victory snaps Clarkโ€™s 47-match district winning streak. Brandeis is away at Boerne Champion Tuesday while Clark will face Johnson at Littleton Gym Tuesday.

Football in the age of COVID-19: What game day will look like this Friday

High school football officially kicks off this Friday with Class 4A-1A teams taking the field one full month before the larger schools in Class 5A and 6A do the same. Local schools have already had a chance to test pre-game screenings during the start of the high school volleyball season. STREAMING SERVICESThis season, the UIL has lifted its ban on live-streaming high school football games, providing an alternative for fans to stay home and support their local team. Trinity volleyball will train together this fall, remains hopeful for spring schedule

But when the time came to start planning for practices, there were just too many unanswered questions. On July 16, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference officially canceled the fall sports season. You just feel horrible for your student athletes, Jenkins said. Since the majority of college athletic programs have canceled their volleyball season, the possibility still remains of conference teams playing a shortened season this spring. It would basically be a year and a half if we had to wait until the fall of 2021.

Harlandale ISD suspends summer workouts for all students until further notice

SAN ANTONIO โ€“ With the coronavirus pandemic not letting up in the San Antonio area, Harlandale Independent School District has decided to cancel its summer workouts. The district on Wednesday announced that strength and conditioning workouts for all students have been suspended until further notice. Workouts were canceled out of โ€œan abundance of caution and due to the rise in COVID-19 cases throughout Bexar County,โ€ Athletic Director Rose Ann Martinez said in a letter. Student safety remains our top priority.โ€Bexar County reported an uptick in COVID-19 cases Tuesday, with the largest daily increase of 436 new cases. The UIL allowed strength and conditioning workouts to begin on June 8 under certain guidelines.

Thomas Jefferson graduate Skyla St. Clair commits to play volleyball for OLLU

SAN ANTONIO Thomas Jefferson graduate, Skyla St. Clair, signed her National Letter of Intent to play volleyball next season for Our Lady of the Lake University on Saturday. Family, friends and coaches celebrated St. Clairs commitment with a ceremony in front of her familys home. The setter received 1st Team All-District honors the past three years and had success in soccer as well earning 2nd Team All-district honors two years in a row. St. Clair is also top 5 in her class and graduated with a 3.9 GPA.

Alamo Heights Volleyball not ready to close chapter on historic season

Alamo Heights โ€“ When the Alamo Heights volleyball team began their season, it was the coaching staff that brought up the idea of playing for a state championship as an achievable goal. Senior outside hitter, Avery Rosenblum, said the selflessness of her teammates on and off the court has allowed for their success. The team did so despite not having its own on-campus facility this season due to ongoing construction of a new gymnasium. โ€œWe just show up into every gym and we just act like we own the place and like itโ€™s our gym,โ€ said Bothe. โ€œTo a certain extent not having our home gym means we just want to win everywhere,โ€ Hozhausen said.
