SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has released the name of a driver who was killed in a crash Friday night on the city’s Northwest Side. The victim was identified as Carisa Allen Kohutek, 36. Kohutek was a teacher at Brandeis High School for nearly seven years, North Side Independent School District spokesman Barry Perez said. Police said Kohutek was killed after she crashed her vehicle into a ditch off Interstate 10 near Casa Bella and UTSA Boulevard. Alcohol didn’t not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Metro Health issued a new directive on Tuesday advising against in-person education, but school districts in Bexar County aren’t planning on closing campuses. Northeast ISD, Northside ISD and San Antonio ISD say that students who are already on-campus will be able to stay there. “We’re staying open because our schools are safe. We’re staying open because our data shows there’s no spread. We’re staying open because our safety protocols are effective,” NEISD spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor said.

“Work to balance the need we have to ensure students and staff are kept safe with the need to address learning loss and instructional needs of individual students,” Perez said. Though unlike NISD, the district is continuing its outreach efforts to struggling virtual learners. The number of NEISD and NISD cases alone is 573 -- with more from NISD counting off-campus staff -- but the Metro Health data only shows 423 cases for all campuses so far. Asked about the discrepancy, a Metro Health spokeswoman said the data may just not have been reported to them yet. While neither NISD nor NEISD plan to force any of their in-person learners to return to virtual learning, both districts say parents may choose to make that switch.

SAN ANTONIO – A Northside ISD bus was involved a minor crash on Friday morning, according to school district officials. The crash was reported near Babcock and Hamilton Wolfe Friday morning around 9 a.m. The bus had one driver and one student on board, Northside ISD spokesperson Barry Perez said. The high school student was not injured and was taken to school. The driver was taken to a medical clinic as a precaution, but no life-threatening injuries were reported, Perez said.

SAN ANTONIO – When the new school year began, Barry Perez, spokesman for the Northside Independent School District, said officials knew it would be “an anomaly” because of the pandemic. “We knew that there would be some families that would look for some other options,” Perez said. “We’re approximately 3,000 short where we thought we would be," said Aubrey Chancellor, spokeswoman for the North East Independent School District. Laura Short, spokeswoman at San Antonio Independent School District, said the district has about 2,400 fewer students. Perez said it could be that some parents chose to home school their children.

SAN ANTONIO – A 62-year-old San Antonio man now behind bars for allegedly distributing child pornography worked as an after-school program specialist at a Northside Independent School District campus, the district said on Monday. According to Barry Perez, the district’s executive director of communications, Juan Benavidez was an employee with NISD until he was terminated by the school district the same day he was arrested by the FBI on July 30. According to Perez, Benavidez was an after-school program specialist for Driggers Elementary School on the Northwest Side near Ingram Park Mall. Perez said Benavidez oversaw after school program staff and did not directly supervise children. If convicted on the charges, Benavidez faces between five to 20 years in federal prison.

SAN ANTONIO Most Bexar County schools are beginning the school year with remote learning, but questions remain about how districts and school systems will report positive student or staff member COVID-19 cases when in-person instruction returns, which could be as soon as Sept. 8. Earlier this month, San Antonio Metro Heath updated its directive that issued guidance on how public, private and other school systems should report any positive COVID-19 cases. Any time we have a positive case at a school, we report it to Metro Health and we send out a letter to that school. NISD spokesperson Barry Perez said the district was still seeking clarification from Metro Health on guidance related to posting positive cases on the districts website. During Tuesday nights COVID-19 briefing, Metro Health Director Dr. Colleen Bridger was asked how the department would enforce schools posting COVID-19 positives on their websites.
