SAN ANTONIO – The Fiesta Oyster Bake at St. Mary’s University has been canceled for a second year due to the coronavirus pandemic. “I am sad to announce that we are canceling Fiesta Oyster Bake 2021 due to the substantial numbers of COVID-19 cases in our region,” association president Joe L. Vela Jr. said in a news release. The Oyster Bake is one of Fiesta’s biggest events, drawing in about 60,000-70,000 fans to the university’s grounds. San Antonio officials had hoped to postpone Fiesta events to Nov. 5-15, 2020, but those plans were scrapped as virus cases continued to increase. The COVID-19 case count reached 155,588 total on Thursday, an increase of 2,507 new cases from the day prior.

Henry Flores, a professor emeritus of political science at St. Mary’s University, says redistricting will likely be the most important topic lawmakers handle this session. The redistricting process happens once a decade in the Legislature followed by the Census. It’s going to be a lot of money spent on just that process before the districts are finally drawn. The data was expected by December 2020 but is now expected in early 2021 and will complicate the process, Flores said. Lawmakers will also have to face bills dealing with public safety as the national outcry for police reform grows.

But, they have limitations for members of the deaf and hard of hearing community. That’s what inspired four graduate students at St. Mary’s University to start their own version of a podcast. It’s called, “the Modcast.”“We were talking about modified podcast,” St. Mary’s graduate student Carrie Villarreal said. “We have asked a lot of people, teachers, that sort of thing,” St. Mary’s graduate student Lane Riggs said. And, they’re looking forward to making their site even better for the deaf and hard of hearing community.

SAN ANTONIO – Competitive video gaming, otherwise known as esports, is considered one of the fastest-growing sports globally. St. Mary’s University launched its Rattler esports program this year. Head coach of the program, Kaitlin Teniente, said Black and Latino students are often underrepresented because of lack of accessibility. However, the university hopes to bridge the divide by providing scholarships to future students who are people of color. “The idea is that these scholarships would help us, in turn, recruit that kind of student to bring them into the program,” Teniente said.

SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary’s University has announced that they will open its brand-new esports arena on Friday, Sept. 18 with a 12-hour fundraising livestream to raise money for future Black and Latino students in the Rattler esports program. “We are so excited to unveil this beautiful arena and to host an important event supporting the Black and Latino communities in the world of esports,” St. Mary’s University Director of Athletics Robert Coleman said. “Over the past year, we have been working with campus leadership to develop a space for our esports arena and to provide our students a home for gaming at St. Mary’s. All donations will go toward scholarships for future Black and Latino students. “At St. Mary’s, we hope to support and strengthen the diversity and representation that gaming needs so it can reach its full potential.”
