Focus should be on present-day Rangers
Editor:I am fully aware that it is too late to do anything about the removal of the Ranger mascot. I do not think it was the right call to do so just because of their history. If it was solely based off of the report from 1918, then I can see why people are upset. I’m sure this band of Rangers weren’t the only ones doing unspeakable things. What I think should have been more focused on is the good that the Texas Rangers do today and how they have changed for the good of the people of Texas as some of the state’s best investigators of crime to date.theranger.org
Changing mascot holds group responsible for acts of a few
Editor:Re: “Replacing mascot raises questions about college leaders” (July 8)Antonio the Ranger is a problem I haven’t heard of until I attended classes at San Antonio College and read The Ranger. Recently, I have learned the “ranger” has an unpleasant and terrifying past on the Tejanos. The Mexican-Americans nicknamed the period 1919-1920 La Hora De Sangre, during which records estimate victims from 500-5,000. Replacing the mascot is a trivial response to discrimination and suggests if a small portion of the group is deplorable, than the whole group is. Will we act and think the same way if a certain race, nationality or religion acts or does anything a certain way and consider the whole group the same?theranger.org
Student looks forward to selection of next mascot
Editor:Re: “Unanimous vote removes Ranger mascot” posted July 15:At first, I did not pay much attention to the story of removing the mascot for San Antonio College, but after reading about the Texas Rangers’ racist history, I could not agree more with the decision to remove the ranger mascot. The unfortunate and ugly truth that surrounds the Rangers’ history cannot be ignored, and I am truly surprised that the mascot wasn’t removed sooner. Upon receiving the unanimous decision to remove the historical image, the president of the college, Dr. Robert Vela, said “This is a historic day!”I find this statement to be empowering and can’t wait to see what our new mascot will be. More than a mascot — how the Ranger name echoes a racist past
“Names of us, even names of individuals, names of places, names of a mascot — names have a history,” Hernandez said in a June 25 phone interview. To understand the debate around the mascot, one must understand the history associated with the Texas Rangers. “There’s plenty of evidence that can help us make the case to not name mascots or teams after the Rangers,” Hernandez said. The report continues with the commission’s findings, which were that the union organizers had found physical and verbal harassment by the Texas Rangers. With that history in mind, the term “Ranger” echoes injustices of the past that have survived in the system.theranger.org

Antonio the Ranger reflects negative stereotypes
As faculty members in the History Program, we are dismayed with the selection of Antonio the Ranger as the new SAC mascot. The choice of Antonio the Ranger as the new SAC mascot is reflective of ethnic stereotypes of Mexican Americans as bandits.
