San Antonio animal shelters offer free, discounted adoption fees for ‘big mutts’ during spring break
SAN ANTONIO – The Animal Defense League and San Antonio Humane Society are offering adoption specials for “big mutts” this spring break. ADL spokesperson Michelle Thorson said pets over 40 pounds will have their adoption fees waived through March 14. Instead, the animal shelter is asking for a monetary donation to help support the program and pets in need. At the San Antonio Humane Society, the “I Like Big Mutts and I Cannot Lie” special is offering a $25 adoption fee for large dogs that are at least 1 year old. Interested adopters wanting a meet and greet can email the Adoption Team at adopt@SAhumane.org and write “Meet and Greet” in the subject line.
Non-profits and small businesses team up to help feed people and protect animals
SAN ANTONIO – In times of need, it’s no surprise many non-profits and small businesses in San Antonio join hands to make sure no one is left out. And when it comes to animals in San Antonio, The San Antonio Zoo is lending a helping hand to the Primarily Primates sanctuary in Leon Springs. “We took in some of their primates and put them where we could, including offices at the zoo,” CEO of the San Antonio Zoo, Tim Morrow said. The San Antonio Food Bank has set up weekend emergency food distribution sites. Montgomery Rd., is also teaming up with the San Antonio Food Bank to give away food boxes this Saturday, February 20, from 9 - 11 a.m. Click here to register.
San Antonio animal shelters will discount dog, cat adoptions for Valentine’s Day weekend
SAN ANTONIO – Looking for love in all the wrong places? Two San Antonio shelters, Animals Care Services and San Antonio Humane Society are offering pet adoptions at a discounted rate this Valentine’s Day. AdThose wishing to adopt an animal from ACS, located at 4710 State Highway 151, can make an appointment here. The San Antonio Humane Society, located at 4804 Fredericksburg Road, will have its no-contact adoption special from Wednesday through Tuesday. Potential adopters will still be screened by the Humane Society.
Puppy safe after found abandoned in box outside San Antonio animal shelter, ACS says
SAN ANTONIO – A puppy was found in a box, left in the cold, in front of a San Antonio animal shelter late last week. Animal Care Services staff found the puppy Thursday morning just outside of its front gate, according to a social media post. 📦 ❓ Our ACS team knows to be aware of their... Monolith helps dogs and cats find their forever homes, makes appearance at Animal Defense League
SAN ANTONIO – A monolith, like the one that appeared in Utah last month, has appeared at the Animal Defense League -- maybe to help dogs and cats find their forever homes. A mysterious monolith had appeared at our Paul Jolly Center this morning. According to center officials, potential pet adopters can come to the center and take a photo with the monolith while visiting the center and hopefully taking home one of the animals sheltered there. Officials are unaware of how long the monolith will be in place, so act fast! Appointments are required, you can schedule yours by clicking here.

While things are good, there is still so much work to be done and animal lives to save. ADL had gotten creative due to social distancing and come up with a virtual marathon fundraiser. Document your progress through of the many fitness tracker apps and then send in your results. Proceeds go to the Animal Defense League of Texas.

SAN ANTONIO - KSAT Community partnered with the Animal Defense League of Texas for the Puppy & Kitten Feedathon in June where ADL had its best month for adoptions with a record-breaking 482 cats and dogs going to permanent homes. "It is with the help of key partnerships such as that with KSAT Community that these learning initiatives are possible, said Joel McLellan, executive director, Animal Defense League of Texas. All ADL's pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated according to age, have microchips implanted and are fully vetted. It was truly heartwarming," said Chris Garza, director of operations, Animal Defense League of Texas.
