GMSA@9 Debrief: Edgewood ISD transitional school brings students back on campus
SAN ANTONIO โ KSAT12โฒs Sarah Acosta joins David Sears to talk about how a program for special education students is adjusting during the pandemic. The Edgewood Independent School Districtโs Burleson School for Innovation and Education helps special needs students ages 18-21 make their transition easier and reach life goals. With the help of several grants and a partnership with Texas A&M San Antonio, the school provides many on site job opportunities for students that help prepare them for the real world. Greg Abbott appeared on KSAT 12 News at Noon on Tuesday to answer questions from KSAT 12 News anchors Ursula Pari and David Sears about the COVID-19 response in the state and his recent decision to expand reopening businesses in Texas. In Phase 2 of reopening Texas, restaurants will be allowed to expand dine-in seating capacity to 50%, bars can operate at 25% capacity starting on May 22, and child care centers can open immediately. Surge response teams are tasked with responding to hot spots, performing massive testing and ensuring that infected people are separated from healthy individuals. He said the typical hot spots are jails, nursing homes and meat packing plants, and once you eliminate the hot spots, the amount of positive cases โlook fairly steady,โ he said. Answer: Abbott said the State Department of Health Services is providing mental health services for residents.

COVID-19 not expected to peak for several weeks in Texas, Gov. Abbott says
He said while the rate for positive cases is still less than 10% of those tested, the dramatic increase of positive cases and deaths from a week ago is concerning. Today the positive cases have more than tripled over last week, and there are now 70 deaths. While the U.S. is expected to see cases peak in about two weeks, the crest in Texas could be a week or 10 days after that, Abbott said. โThere has never been this many people applying for unemployment in Texas,โ Abbott said. Living in the Hill Country will make social distancing a little easier for KSATโs David Sears. David is relaxing at home this week after his vacation was canceled due to the novel coronavirus. He told GMSA @ 9 that he and his wife were planning on visiting their grandchildren in Alabama. KSATโs Mike Osterhage self quarantines after son came into contact with coronavirus-positive personHe added that heโll even spend some time outdoors. And because his neighbors live several hundred yards away, social distancing wonโt be a problem.
