Meanwhile, PSJA North’s Hector Solis captured his first career state berth in track, finishing second in the Class 6A boys 3,200-meter run behind Austin Vandergrift’s Kevin Sanchez. In Class 6A, Harlingen High’s Jazmine Thompson shined in her regional debut, finishing first and second in the shot put and discus throw, respectively. Thompson set a personal best in the discus, tallying a mark of 133-08 to top her previous record of 130-11. Day 2 of the Region IV-5A and 6A track and field championships is set for 12:30 p.m. today.

MISSION — The La Joya Palmview Lobos secured their first district title since 2017 by defeating the Roma Gladiators 4-1 in District 30-5A competition Friday at La Joya Palmview High School. They worked hard and they’re a great ball club, so I told our guys we can’t let (the district title) get away from our grasp,” Palmview head coach Manuel Garcia said. The Lobos can complete a perfect run through league play by defeating Roma in Game 2 of their home-and-home series, scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Roma High School. Rio Grande Valley girls Class 5A and 4A golfers wrapped up their seasons Thursday at their respective regional golf tournaments. Sharyland High finished fifth in the Region IV-5A tournament. Lopez finished tied for 10th and was only one stroke behind the last individual qualifying space. Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s Rebecca Rodriguez (175) finished 28th, and Alli Ysaguirre (182) came in 33rd. Mission Veterans Memorial’s Kayla Rodriguez (190), Lillian Marroquin (200), Madison Davis (195), Amy Perez (235) and Victoria Olivarez (257) ended up 10th.

The UIL released conference cutoff numbers and preliminary enrollment figures for the 2022-24 reclassification and realignment Wednesday, which will result in significant changes to the high school sports landscape in the Rio Grande Valley. The cutoff number for Class 5A is between 1,300-2,224, Class 4A is 545-1,299, Class 3A is 250-544, Class 2A is 105-249, and Class 1A is 104.9 and below. The football conference and division numbers are broken down even further with Class 5A-1A split into Division I and Division II. The most notable changes include Donna North, Edinburg Vela, Harlingen South, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln and PSJA North moving down from Class 6A to Class 5A for all sports. “It’s going to make the 5A districts even more tough,” said PSJA North head coach Marcus Kaufmann.
