After long pandemic year, a changed New York shows renewal
After the virus descended on New York, the only sounds in the streets were wailing ambulance sirens. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan)NEW YORK – Pamela Puchalski still remembers how frightening it felt when the coronavirus upended life in her New York City neighborhood last March. The city’s cultural institutions and organizations sought solutions as the pandemic disrupted a year’s worth of concerts, festivals, performances and special events. “We really, really felt kind of a sense among our community, this need for live in-person events,” she said. That’s the draw of New York City, she said, and part of the reason New Yorkers have tried so hard to adapt, to find the ways forward.

No. 3 NC State beats No. 5 Louisville 58-56 for ACC title
3 North Carolina State beat fifth-ranked Louisville 58-56 in Sunday's championship game of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. On the winning play, Perez initially started to pass to Cunane rolling into the lane, but the point guard had to pull the ball back when the pass wasn't there. Instead, she collected her feet and shook off six straight misses dating to the second quarter to cleanly bury the jumper for the second-seeded Wolfpack (20-2). It was a disappointing final play for Evans after she had struggled with her shot for the previous two games and the first half Sunday. But the Cardinals didn't score again and ultimately came a play or two short of winning the program's second ACC Tournament title.

709,000 seek US jobless aid as pandemic escalates
Last week’s new applications for unemployment benefits was down from 757,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday. Even so, weekly applications for jobless aid remain at historically high levels. The applications likely include some people who lost jobs weeks ago but who have had to wait for states to process their claims. Government stimulus, in the form of federal unemployment benefits, aid for small businesses and checks to most individuals has largely run out. Perez now receives just $91 in jobless aid every two weeks.

OAS chief under fire for removal of top rights official
But in recent days, she stepped into the middle of a bitter feud between Almagro and the leadership of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights, or IACHR, the regions top rights watchdog. Human rights defenders and the United Nations immediately condemned the move as a threat to the IACHRs independence. This intervention is suggestive of an unprecedented political maneuver by the OAS' secretary general, he said. She says she learned about Almagros plans to issue a statement from other OAS employees not the Secretary General himself. I have always been willing to listen and I am open to any serious and impartial investigation with all rights preserved.
