Families reunite at long-term care facilities following lift of year-long restrictions
SAN ANTONIO โ Susie Lopez, a resident at Morningside Ministries, got a surprise visit Wednesday afternoon. Her sister Janie Hernandez was allowed to make an in-person visit. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission has authorized expanded visitations statewide in nursing homes and other long-term care settings. Previously, only essential caregivers were allowed in-person visits. Wes Wells, the executive director of Morningside Ministries, said that they welcome the new guidance.
Flood of Capitol riot, tribal cases swamps US prosecutors

Now, more than 300 people have been charged so far in the Capitol riot that resulted in the deaths of five people, and at least 100 more are expected to be charged. Meanwhile, Capitol riot investigators are wading through more than 15,000 hours of footage from surveillance cameras and officersโ body-worn cameras, information from about 1,600 electronic devices and more than 210,000 tips from the public. The Capitol riot cases will likely be lined up behind older ones waiting months to go to trial, Hernandez said, noting that she had one originally scheduled for last April that's now booked for September. โRight now, because of our resources, weโre triaging and taking the most serious of cases, the violent crime cases, the cases that have acts against children and things of that nature."
Olympic gymnast Hernandez enjoys solid return at Winter Cup

San Antonio nurse says post-COVID recovery clinic changed her life
SAN ANTONIO โ A San Antonio registered nurse who contracted COVID-19 last year said a post-COVID recovery clinic at the South Texas Medical Center changed her life. Hernandez said she contracted COVID-19 in June and went to the emergency room twice. โIt started with extreme body aches to the point where I couldnโt get out of bed, and within hours I couldnโt breathe,โ Hernandez said. In late August, Hernandez learned about the COVID-19 recovery clinic located at the UT Health San Antonio Medical Arts and Research Center. โI think weโre so blessed to have a clinic here in San Antonio to help us with post-COVID syndrome,โ Hernandez said.
Some Texans are hesitant to get vaccinated for COVID-19. Hereโs how health officials are countering skepticism.

Retiree Carolyn Brown Voyles of Terrell has always gotten her flu shot, as well as a pneumonia vaccine, but said she is hesitant about the COVID-19 vaccine because itโs so new. โPublic health officials are very slow to provide support and access to testing and treatment for African Americans and Latinos, even as their numbers continued to show that they were being disproportionately harmedโ by the virus, Yearby said. Texas officials have not outlined a strategy for reaching Black residents within their vaccine rollout plan, according to a recent investigation by ProPublica. At the Houston Methodist health system, officials are monitoring which employees voluntarily vaccinated and said staffers of color are underrepresented, said Roberta Schwartz, Houston Methodistโs chief innovation officer.

Virtual events for seniors offer cultural insight, how-to lessons celebrating Dia de Muertos
The events were organized by Senior Planet, a nonprofit that helps older adults bridge the digital divide, and the Latino Collection and Resource Center at the San Antonio Public Library. DeAnne Cuellar, state director of Older Adults Technology Services, said since the information was posted on the Senior Planet website, the response has been overwhelming. โLots of curiosity from people outside of San Antonio,โ Cuellar said. Lawrence Lucido, a member of Senior Planet, said heโs among many others who are excited about the program. โWe as the whole country are experiencing a collective loss right now.โCuellar said the free sessions can be viewed by anyone on the Senior Planet website and on its Facebook page.
Drivers happy with changes made to โdangerousโ curve in Helotes
HELOTES, Texas โ Crews have improved a curve off FM 1560 and Riggs Road that drivers called dangerous and deadly with the hope of fewer crashes in the area. However, cement barriers created a new problem for drivers. Catherine McCoy, the COPS-Metro Alliance leader, said the spot was dangerous to drivers, especially with the growth in the area. โPeople should have a right to know that when theyโre on the road that these roads are safe, that the engineers have designed it in a safe way,โ McCoy said. Trees and vegetation also added to drivers' concerns, but a group of volunteers cleaned the area to create a clearer and safer way for drivers.
New PBS film probes construction boom on Latino workers

The film dives into the lives of one Mexican immigrant family in Texas after their construction worker son dies while on the job. The film, though a partnership with Latino Public Broadcasting, is scheduled to begin airing on most PBS stations on Tuesday to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States.
CLEAR Alert discontinued for missing woman in Corpus Christi
SAN ANTONIO โ Update:The CLEAR Alert for Paulina Hernandez has been discontinued by law enforcement officials. Original:The Corpus Christi Police Department is asking for the publicโs help in its search for a missing 22-year-old woman. Paulina Hernandez was last seen at 2:30 a.m., Aug. 13, in the 6000 block of Airstream Drive in Corpus Christi, officials said. According to the alert, Hutchins and Hernandez were last seen in a 2015 blue Honda Civic with Oklahoma license plate DLH434. Ammonia spill kills more than 50 fish at San Pedro Creek
SAN ANTONIO In a statement to KSAT, the San Antonio River Authority confirmed an ammonia spill that happened at San Pedro Creek on Wednesday and is affecting fish and animals who call the creek home. Yviand Serbones-Hernandez, brand and communications coordinator for the San Antonio River Authority said in a statement that the spill is believed to have happened Kiolbassa Smoked Meats plant by a storm drain inlet on S. San Marcos Street. Hernandez said the River Authoritys Environmental Investigations team confirmed the odor and reported that approximately 50 fish were killed. Hernandez said River Authority staff has continued to monitor the area and reported an increase of dead fish on Wednesday. The River Authority was also made aware of dead fish observed at the river junction of San Pedro Creek and the San Antonio River on the Mission Reach segment.
