Sharyland alumnus Barrera signs with St. Louis Cardinals
Sharyland High alumnus and former Texas Longhorns and Washington Nationals catcher Tres Barrera signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization, he announced on Twitter Friday. He joins the St. Louis Cardinals on a minor league contract for 2023 with a non-roster invite to Spring Training. A non-roster invite is an invitation for a player whois not on a club’s 40-man roster to attend Major League camp in Spring Training and compete for a roster spot. Barrera, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, has played in 51 games over the last four seasons with the Nationals. Barrera graduated from Sharyland in 2013 and played for the Texas Longhorns from 2014-2016, earning All-Big 12 honors during his sophomore and junior seasons.

During the second quarter, the Longhorns pushed their lead to 33-16 after a jumper from Shay Holle. During the third quarter, a 3-pointer from Rori Harmon pushed the Longhorn’s lead to 60-32.

Every Texas Longhorns offensive lineman on scholarship will get $50,000 annually for use of their name, image and likeness to support charitable causes, a new nonprofit entity announced Monday. Horns with Heart said “The Pancake Factory” would start in August 2022. The organization said it hopes to expand the program to other football position groups and Longhorns athletes in the future.

EDINBURG — The UTRGV baseball program released its 2022 season schedule Wednesday which features 56 games and is headlined by a non-conference matchup against the Texas Longhorns on April 26 at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg. “It’s a full schedule with some great midweek (games) with Texas State, Houston, Incarnate Word, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA,” UTRGV head coach Derek Matlock said. The biggest change from last year’s WAC schedule to this season’s is the introduction of two divisions, which splits the conference down the middle. UTRGV is in the Southwest Division along with Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Tarleton. UTRGV is scheduled to close out WAC competition against Stephen F. Austin from May 19-21 in Nacogdoches.

The group needed a first-place finish in the final race in addition to Stanford finishing ahead of Washington to win the national championship via a tiebreaker. It was just a really special moment when we all got together as a team and really hyped them up and got them excited for their race,” Nitsch said.

The letter calls for the NCAA to honor Title IX, which forbids gender discrimination throughout federally funded education institutions. "The players on the women's and men's teams have not been treated equally by the NCAA," the letter says.

Texas to pay Vince Young $100,000 in new special assistant job

The College Football Hall of Famer was rehired by the program in December and returned to campus Jan. 4. Young returns to campus at a time the program is trying to build momentum behind new head coach Steve Sarkisian.

Young led the Longhorns to the 2005 season national championship with a last-minute touchdown against USC. Terms of Young's job and salary in the athletic department were not immediately disclosed. AdFormer Texas Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell is also a longtime special assistant in athletics.
Steve Sarkisian hired as new Texas Longhorns football coach; Tom Herman fired
This comes after the firing of previous head coach Tom Herman, as announced Saturday. Original:Tom Herman has been fired as head football coach of the Texas Longhorns. We thank Coach Herman for his service and dedication to our student-athletes, our program and our university,” university officials said in a statement. His final game as Longhorns head coach was a victory over Colorado in the 2020 Valero Alamobowl. According to reports, Texas is looking to hire Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian to replace Herman.
17 people cited, warned or kicked out of Alamo Bowl for ‘repeated refusal’ to wear face masks, city says
SAN ANTONIO – As the Texas Longhorns crushed the Colorado Buffaloes in the Alamo Bowl Tuesday night, security staff were throwing penalty flags of their own off the field. The City of San Antonio’s running database of citations was updated Wednesday to show that 10 people at the game, inside the Alamodome, were cited for “repeated refusal” to wear masks or wear them properly. The violation states that the guests had received prior warnings before they were cited. Another seven people were either issued warnings or left/were escorted out due to violating the mask rule, according to the city. The San Antonio Development Services Department (DSD), Center City Development and Operations Department, San Antonio Police Department and Metro Health are all charged with enforcing San Antonio’s emergency declaration, set in place to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Texas game at Kansas canceled after several Longhorns players, staff test positive for COVID-19
AUSTIN, Texas – Saturday’s college football game between Texas and Kansas has been canceled following a spread of COVID-19 cases among Longhorns players and staff. Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte released a statement that read in part:“We are pausing all football team activities and shutting down football training facilities to get a COVID-19 spread among our Football program under control. We currently have nine student-athletes and 13 staff members who have tested positive this week, all of whom are in self-isolation. “We’re extremely disappointed that we won’t be able to play our final regular season game at Kansas this week, but look forward to returning to action for our bowl game in the coming weeks,” said Del Conte. Other high profile games cancelled or postponed this week include Ohio State vs. Michigan and Texas A&M vs. Ole Miss.
Texas game against Kansas on Saturday postponed due to COVID issues
AUSTIN, Texas – This Saturday’s Texas Longhorns game against the Kansas Jayhawks has been postponed, according to the Big 12 conference. The conference issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon that said the following:“In accordance with Big 12 Conference football game interruption guidelines, the Texas at Kansas game scheduled for November 21 has been postponed. The time and television designation will be announced when available.”Stadium College Football Insider Brett McMurphy reported that the game, which was scheduled to be played in Lawrence, was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Kansas football program. This is the first time a UT game has been rescheduled or postponed this season due to the virus. The state’s other premiere program, Texas A&M, will also not play this weekend due to COVID-19 issues.
Big 12 to implement rapid COVID-19 tests day before games
The Big 12 announced Friday it has secured access to COVID-19 antigen testing that produces rapid results and will be used the day before competition on players, coaches and staff. The partnership with Virtual Care for Families calls for a testing program that will use Quidel Rapid Antigen tests. The Pac-12 recently announced a partnership with Quidel that will provide its schools with the capacity to test daily and get results in about 15 minutes. The Big 12 said it expects the same timeframe from the Quidel tests. The Big 12, like the other five college football conferences currently moving forward with a fall season, is requiring its 10 schools to test athletes three times per week during competition.
No. 14 Texas eager to get to kickoff with opener vs UTEP
A quick look around the Big 12 justifies his trepidation. Get that far and Texas can at least start a season in pursuit of its first Big 12 championship since 2009. Texas' first Big 12 game is scheduled for Sept 26 at Texas Tech. The Big Ten and Pac-12 scrapped their fall seasons while the Big 12, SEC ad ACC push ahead. Texas has lacked a big-time edge rusher in the past and big things are expected of him.

Assalley’s 36-yard FG gives Iowa State 23-21 win over Texas
AMES, Iowa (AP) – Connor Assalley kicke a 36-yard field goal as time expired and Iowa State knocked off 22nd-ranked Texas 23-21 on Saturday to snap a two-game losing streak. Brayden Narveson missed an apparent 42-yard field goal with 2:12 to go, but Texas was called for being offside and Iowa State was awarded a first down by inches. But the Cyclones stuffed the Longhorns on their next possession, and Purdy took Iowa State 63 yards in three minutes to set up Assalley’s kick. Iowa State: The Cyclones also lost to Baylor 23-21 on a field goal to end the game, so this win was extra special for the program. Iowa State hosts Kansas next Saturday.
Ehlinger leads No. 11 Texas over West Virginia 42-31
11 Texas converted three turnovers into TDs in a 42-31 victory over West Virginia on Saturday. Ehlinger and Texas (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) beat the Mountaineers (3-2, 1-1) on the road for the second straight time. Ehlinger and several Texas players were upset last year after several Mountaineers flashed "horns down" signs during West Virginia's 42-41 win in Austin, Texas. Texas coach Tom Herman praised his defense for making key plays when West Virginia had a chance to retake the lead after halftime. West Virginia: The Mountaineers host the Cyclones next Saturday after Iowa State embarrassed the Mountaineers 30-14 a year ago.

But as good as Ehlinger was, LSU quarterback Joe Burrow was that much better in a phenomenal performance. During last years narrow defeat at home to Clemson, it was a coming-out party for Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond. UIW set a school record with 402 rushing yards and quarterback Jon Copeland tied a single-game record with five touchdown passes.

According to Texas Football magazine, he is eighth on the career rushing list for Texas high schools. He led Midland Lee to three straight state championships, the only three in school history, from 1998 to 2000. "It's an unbelievably sad day with the news of the passing of Cedric Benson," Herman said in a statement. Texas versus Notre Dame football preview
10 ranked Notre Dame at home in a rematch of last season's opener. Notre Dame won convincingly last year 38-3. Texas senior quarterback Tyrone Swoopes has been competing with true freshman Shane Buechele, while DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire each started at times last season. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 9-2. Notre Dame can't afford early stumbles to struggling programs if it wants to be a national playoff contender in December.
