The annual Peanut Butter Bowl, held in every high school football season since 2016 as a food drive to collect peanut butter and combat chronic hunger, has expanded to 10 games and 20 different teams this season including a pair of Austin schools.

Harlan’s season over after playoff game canceled due to COVID-19

SAN ANTONIO – The Harlan Hawks’ Class 6A Division I high school football first round playoff game scheduled for this Friday at Gustafson Stadium against Laredo United South has been canceled. The Northside School District Athletic Department announced the game’s cancellation Thursday afternoon on social media. The statement from school district officials said that “multiple individuals associated with the Harlan High School team have confirmed COVID cases or have been quarantined as a result of potential exposure.”The decision was made after consultation with San Antonio Metro Health “with the safety of both teams and schools in mind.”As a result, the Harlan Hawks football season ends with a 5-4 overall record. Laredo United South will enjoy a bye in the first round of the postseason and will play the winner of Friday Night’s playoff game between Mission and San Benito.

For rural Texans, the Postal Service is a lifeline, but some say it’s been in decay for years

In rural areas where broadband internet connection is scarce, residents rely on the Postal Service to send checks, pay bills, get Social Security benefits and receive prescription medication. Places that had bad service probably still have bad service.”Across rural Texas, business owners, community leaders and farmers told The Texas Tribune that the quality of USPS service varies from post office to post office. We have no issues with the Postal Service, they are prompt and they do good service,” Plagens said. “We depend on our Postal Service, and we get taken care of by them,” Roberson said. “The Postal Service is grossly understaffed, especially in the rural areas that I represent,” Williams said.

Harlan edges Southside in Region IV quarterfinalsThe scores from Southsides three games against District 28-5A rival Harlan reveal much about the teams progress. With increasingly stronger defense and inside play, Southside pushed the 28-5A champion Hawks in ways other district teams didnt. Down the stretch, Harlan (28-5) received contributions from role players to nail down a 75-67 win in the Region IV quarterfinal. Harlan got going early and theyre a good basketball team, Southside coach Shawn Dalbert said. The 6-foot-6 sophomore deflected a pass that Anthony Mendoza stole with 49.5 seconds to play, but Southside didnt get closer.

Legacy and Harlan play for first place Tuesday night

The Southwest Legacy Titans and the San Antonio Harlan Hawks currently are tied for first place in the District 28-5A boys basketball race. Those two teams will collide in head-to-head competition next Tuesday night at Legacy. Harlan, 4-0 in district play, will host Medina Valley tomorrow night, before meeting Legacy next Tuesday night. Their other three district wins have come over Somerset, 78-40; Floresville, 100-72; and Southside, 102-73. Prior to the district showdown Tuesday, the Titans, 3-0 in district, will host their Southwest ISD rivals, the Southwest Dragons tomorrow evening at Legacy.
