SAN ANTONIO – Private and public businesses and service centers are beginning to announce their own changes to COVID-19 safety protocol following Gov. Greg Abbott’s announcement of the state’s “100% reopening.” Since then, area school districts have explained their safety protocols going forward. Bandera ISD - The district said it will not change its current COVID-19 safety protocols following Abbott’s announcement. South San Antonio ISD - South San ISD will continue to include required mask usage as part of COVID-19 safety protocols. SAN ANTONIO – Following last week’s icy conditions and power outages, schools are still announcing changes and closures this week. Great Hearts San Antonio Schools - Classes expected to resume on Monday, Feb. 22. Premier High School San Antonio Windcrest - Classes resuming on Monday, Feb. 22. Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD - All SCUC ISD campuses will be open on Monday, Feb. 22 for both In Person and at-home learning. South San ISD - South San ISD campuses and offices will be closed through Friday.

Dr. Ferdinand L. Herff Elementary School Principal Tanya Tate was named the Counselor Advocate of the Year, while Capt. Mark Tyler Voss Middle School Counselor Denise Nipper earned Middle School Counselor of the Year. Boerne ISD to vaccinate 70 employees for COVID-19 through partnership with University Health

SAN ANTONIO – Some employees with the Boerne Independent School District will receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to district officials. Boerne ISD, in partnership with the San Antonio University Health System, will vaccinate 70 employees that were selected, based on if they qualify under the phase 1B criteria. “We are especially grateful to the generosity of the University Health System and their efforts to make the vaccine available for our employees. The school will continue seeking other opportunities to vaccinate more of its employees in the coming weeks. Three Boerne ISD students chosen as part of NASA’s Texas High School Aerospace program

BOERNE, Texas – Three Boerne-Champion High School students have been selected to be part of a prestigious NASA aerospace program, the Boerne Independent School District said. Juniors Tyler Dennis, Robert “Sy” Gutierrez, and Jonathan Segura will work with teams at NASA on lunar colonization as part of the NASA Texas High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) Program. The press release said as part of the year-long program the students will receive interactive lessons related to space exploration, earth science, technology and aeronautics. “I am so excited for Tyler, Sy, and Jonathan to have been selected for this amazing program,” said Champion Science Teacher Amanda Pelletier. “The High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) program is highly regarded by science professionals and is sought out by top students across Texas.

Boerne ISD confirms first positive COVID-19 case since start of in-person learning

BOERNE, Texas – Boerne ISD officials have confirmed a positive COVID-19 case at Champion High School. The individual who tested positive for the virus is advised to follow health guidelines and will need to undergo a quarantine, according to Boerne ISD. Parents are also aware of the positive COVID-19 case and if their student has been exposed. Boerne ISD said it is working to sanitize areas of the building occupied by the person who tested positive. Majority of Boerne ISD students return to school Wednesday for in-person learning

BOERNE, Texas – Wednesday is the first day back at school for students in the Boerne Independent School District. When parents were polled from the district if they wanted their students to return for in-person learning, 77% of parents said they wanted their children back in the classroom. Bryan Benway, Director of Communications for Boerne ISD said the district has taken several steps to ensure social distancing will take place at the school. “We highly encourage parents if possible to bring their kids to school,” Benway said. Boerne ISD to reopen campuses on Aug. 12 following Texas AGs legal guidance

BOERNE, TX Boerne ISD announced Tuesday that, based on legal guidance from the Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, all of its schools would be allowed to open on Aug. 12 with both in-person and online learning. The district confirmed in a letter to all parents at Van Raub and Fair Oaks Ranch elementary schools that class would be held in Boerne ISD classrooms following Paxton's decision. According to a statement from Boerne ISD, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health Departments health directive, issued July 17, delayed the opening of on-campus instruction until Sept. 7 for all schools in Bexar County. Additionally, the Texas Education Agency stated that campuses that did not offer an in-person educational opportunity would not be funded. Boerne When school starts on Aug. 12, most parents of Boerne ISD students will have a choice whether to send their kids back or keep them home to learn remotely. So, those two campuses will be playing by a different set of rules than the other districts other 10 schools, no matter what parents might have picked otherwise. The same day, Metro Health Medical Director Dr. Junda Woo issued a directive, forbidding in-person instruction on Bexar County school campuses. The affected Comal ISD schools are: Indian Springs Elementary, Specht Elementary, Timberwood Park Elementary, Kinder Ranch Elementary, and Pieper Ranch Middle School. In a letter to parents on July 17, Comal ISD Superintendent Andrew Kim said he wanted to clearly state that I disagree with this directive.

SAN ANTONIO – Despite an assurance from the Texas Education Agency that schools could offer remote-only instruction without losing funding, Boerne ISD plans to go forward with an option for students to attend in person. According to school district officials, families can choose to do traditional in-person learning or the Boerne E-learning option for their students. Boerne ISD names new principal at Kendall Elementary

BOERNE, Texas – The Boerne Independent School District has announced its new principal for Kendall Elementary School. Shelene Livas is currently the principal at Ketelsen Elementary School in the Houston Independent School District and was approved by the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees on Monday. A press release said Livas’ educational career includes 21 years of service that is devoted to creating rich learning opportunities for students and helping teachers develop their craft. She has worked as a campus principal, assistant principal, interdisciplinary instructional coach, instructional specialist, and bilingual teacher during her career, the press release said. Livas is scheduled to officially begin in July.

Free drive-up Wi-Fi hotspots available on Boerne ISD campuses

BOERNE, Texas – Boerne ISD is offering free drive-up Wi-Fi hotspots for students amid the coronavirus pandemic. Students can drive up to the hotspots located at Champion High School, Fabra Elementary School, Boerne High School and Boerne Middle School South to utilize the Wi-Fi, according to school officials.
