First historical marker dedicated to Black woman in Wilson County honors education pioneer
A journal from the past is giving us a look into the life of a woman who was a pioneer for the Black community in Wilson County. The name Minnie Washington Yates may not be very recognizable when it comes to Black history in South Texas, but her impact on education is felt to this day.

Texas Farm Bureau, others assessing winter storm damage
POTH, Texas – As the president of the Texas Farm Bureau, Russell Boening experienced much of what the rest of the state’s agriculture industry endured during last month’s record cold. Boening said he agrees with Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller’s prediction that the financial impact of the winter storm could be a billion dollars, if not more. AdWith the fragrant orange blossoms already on the trees, Murden said next year’s crop is gone. He said it’s been estimated the citrus industry has an economic impact of $468 million. The Texas Farm Bureau has been assessing the winter storm damage, but its spokesman said the figures, when complete, will come from the Texas Department of Agriculture and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

According to the magazine's list of the best butcher shops in the U.S., Dziuk’s Meat Market in Castroville and Wiatrek’s Meat Market in Poth are among the Texas institutions that ranked on top. "In the part of Texas settled by Alsatian immigrants back in the 1800s, it’s not really a party until someone breaks out the parisa, the local take on beef tartare, typically including cheese, and often chiles, along with a dash of citrus— no surprise then, it's a hot seller at the busiest butcher shop in the area,"wrote of Dziuk’s. Meats, merch, seasonings and sauces also abound in that suburban outpost.

Poth, TEXAS – A month after opening its doors back to in-person instruction, Poth ISD is closing them once again after a high school student and elementary teacher test positive for COVID-19. “This decision to close all campuses has been made in order to protect both students and staff from further exposure risk,” Renken stated in the letter. Last month, all students except medically-exempt students and those with high-risk family members were required to return to the classroom. The closure will go into effect Tuesday, Nov. 17, and will stay in place for the rest of the week. “We hope the planned Thanksgiving week holiday in combination with this closure will help slow the spread of the virus,” Renken stated in the letter.

Most Poth ISD students will return to the classroom Monday, district officials say
School officials said productivity was low with virtual learning. “We’re going to be as safe as we can here at school,” said Poth ISD Superintendent Paula Renken. Poth ISD school officials only one student, a kindergartner, has tested positive for COVID-19. After Poth ISD officials sent parents a letter Thursday announcing the decision, dozens took to Facebook with concerns. As parents hurry to rearrange their plans, school officials say they’re working to keep the school environments safe.

Great Graduates 2020: Miles Korzekwa
Poth, Texas Hard work and determination have paid off for Poth High School graduate Miles Korzekwa. Despite growing up in the small community of Koscuisko just outside of Poth, Korzekwa is ready to move to a bigger city. One way was joining a volunteer program and logging over 100 hours of volunteer work. His hard work paid off and Korzekwa finished at the top of his senior class with a 106.39 GPA. Even though weve had all this stuff going on, theres still better things ahead, Korzekwa said.
