Windcrest moved one step closer to hiring a fire marshal after hearing about the benefits of having the new position on the payroll. Windcrest Fire Chief Daniel Kramer said the city’s current fire marshal contract with Hollywood Park Fire Lt. Timothy Zelenak is based on individual responses at $70 per call rather than a salary. “The cost to the city is $70 per fire marshal activity, with the city averaging about 90 activities a month,” Kramer said. City secretary Rachel Dominquez said her staff would produce a summary that tells how many inspections the fire marshal responded to, and how much money the marshal was paid during that time. “The fire marshal position falls to … Castillo to fill because it is not a council-appointed position,” City Attorney Ryan Henry said.

WINDCREST, Texas – Pet owners living in and around Windcrest are relieved after the arrest of a man accused of stealing other people’s dogs. Cody Lee Canfield, 33, was arrested Monday and charged for the incident involving a 68-year-old woman who was gardening last Monday. The victim provided a license plate number and video she captured of the incident to police, leading to Canfield’s arrest. AdHernandez said Bexar County deputies who were assisting with this case discovered Canfield after he wrecked his vehicle near his home. “I know there are at least three different cases multiple agencies are dealing with,” Hernandez said.
Kitchen fire causes roughly $50,000 in damage to Northeast Side home, fire officials say
SAN ANTONIO – A kitchen fire damaged a home just outside the Windcrest city limits late Wednesday night, fire officials said. The fire was called in around 9:30 p.m. at a home in the 6600 block of Woodford Street, far from New World Drive and Montgomery Drive on the city’s Northeast Side. Firefighters said when they arrived, they found flames on a wall and coming out of the roof. Fire officials said they were able to put out the fire quickly and without incident. The woman who was cooking inside the home managed to get out safely and was not hurt.

Woman found sleeping in man’s Windcrest home cut him when he told her to leave, police say
The affidavit states the man then left his home to cash a check and to “avoid a confrontation” with Polivchak. He returned home and began playing loud music in his bedroom, the affidavit states. He then heard glass breaking, turned down the music and yelled at Polivchak to leave, according to investigators. The man grabbed a broom handle and told the woman to leave. The affidavit states Polivchak left the house and waited by the garage “for her ride.”The stabbing victim left his house to get help from a nearby fire department.
Windcrest residents hope voting process is faster moving forward in the 2020 election
WINDCREST, Texas – Like several small cities around Bexar County, the city of Windcrest had its share of long voting lines on the first day of early voting. 33K+ cast ballots on first day of early voting in Bexar CountySome residents were surprised to see lines stretching to the roadway from the Civic Center. Most of the residents KSAT spoke with were excited to see so many letting their voices be heard. Windcrest lowers tax rate, maintains budget moving forward
Residents of Windcrest will see another drop in their tax rate this year, although increasing property values may mean a slight uptick in actual tax bills. City Council voted on Sept. 21 to approve the voter approval tax rate of $0.409494, a slight decrease from the 2019-20 rate of $0.413544. The voter-approval tax rate is the highest rate that the city may adopt without holding an election to seek voter approval of the rate. When the new lower tax rate is applied to the increased home value, it produces an average tax of $959 for the year, up $23 — less than $2 per month — from the $936 produced by last year’s tax rate. “We’re required to have a 25 percent fund balance moving forward.”Castillo said City Council’s priority in working on the budget remains public safety.

Multiple fire departments responded to a house fire in Windcrest early Tuesday morning. The fire was called in around 3 a.m. at a home in the 225 block of Windcrest Drive, not far from Walzem Road and Loop 410. Fire officials said firefighters arrived to find both heavy smoke and flames. The Windcrest Fire Department, the Converse Fire Department, and the Bexar County Fire Department were among the many departments who answered the fire call. What started as a kitchen fire in one familys apartment became a problem for everyone in that Windcrest building Monday morning. According to Chief Dan Kramer with the Windcrest Volunteer Fire Department, the flames spread quickly. However, firefighters had to rely on help from other agencies after they realized the pump on their truck wasnt working. At one point, a section of the building collapsed but firefighters were able to escape injury, he said. Still, she said they will rebuild, thanks to help from the apartment complex and the American Red Cross.
Fire forces evacuation of apartment building in Windcrest
SAN ANTONIO - Multiple fire crews responded to a fire at an apartment building in Windcrest overnight. The fire spread throughout the apartment building damaging all four units, authorities said. Residents of the apartment building had to evacuate their homes as emergency crews worked at the scene. Two people in the apartment where the fire started were taken to an area hospital to get checked for smoke inhalation, firefighters said. The Windcrest Fire Department, the Alamo Heights Fire Department, the Universal City Fire Department, the Air Force Fire Department and Arcadian EMS all originally answered the call.
