Dozens of hospitals, urgent care clinics and H-E-B pharmacies in Bexar County are slated to receive 30,200 doses of the Moderna vaccine this week. Made by Moderna, the vaccine requires two doses like the already approved Pfizer vaccine. The Moderna vaccine was endorsed by a government advisory panel on Thursday in a 20-0 vote. Some rural areas that had been waiting for word on when they would receive shipments will be included in week 2, data shows. Last week, nearly 30,000 doses of the Pfizer-made vaccine were shipped to San Antonio-area hospitals and military bases.
La Vernia High School campus goes to virtual-only learning due to increase in COVID-19 cases
LA VERNIA, Texas – The La Vernia Independent School District has closed its high school campus for the rest of the week due to an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases on campus. “We only moved the High School to all virtual for the remainder of the week due to an increase in both COVID-19 positive cases and necessary quarantines. When we made the decision yesterday, our High School was experiencing substantially greater percentages than our other campuses,” said Superintendent Dr. Henley Cole. There’s no indication whether remote learning will once again be offered when students return in January. Earlier this week, Seguin ISD also announced that its high school would go to virtual-only learning this week.
San Antonio family’s lawn mower used to maintain cemetery stolen
La Vernia – A San Antonio family is asking the community for help with the return of their stolen lawn mower they used to maintain a cemetery where their 16-year-old son was buried. He treated his family like friends.”When Ibraheem Azooz, or Ibie, passed away, he was buried in the Islamic Cemetery in La Vernia off County Road 341. In addition to visiting their son and maintaining the trees in the cemetery multiple times a week, every Sunday, they cut the grass. It is heartbreaking.”The family has since taken their search to social media, to flyers, and to the La Vernia Police Department. Remote learning at La Vernia ISD no longer an option after Thanksgiving holiday
LA VERNIA, Texas – After Thanksgiving, remote learning will no longer be offered at the La Vernia Independent School District following its school board’s decision on Monday. Cone said the district had already gone from 75% to 90% of its 3,200 students who had to return to school. “We’ve had a couple of positive cases this week, all contracted outside of the school district,” Cone said. Not only does the district perform deep cleaning nightly, but Cone also said similar precautions are taken throughout the day. He said the district trusts that all of them will watch for symptoms, quarantine if necessary, and get tested.

La Vernia PD seeks help in finding missing 15-year-old girl
LA VERNIA, Texas – The La Vernia Police Department is asking for the public’s help in finding a missing 15-year-old girl. ViVi Ann Gordon was reported missing at 5 p.m. Tuesday, police said. She was last seen leaving the La Vernia High School campus on foot heading toward the city park. She was last seen wearing black sweat pants with white lettering on the left leg, a black long sleeve shirt with a “Hot Wheels” imprint and black shoes. New La Vernia ISD superintendent promises transparency and communication
LA VERNIA – La Vernia ISD sits off U.S. Highway 87, east of San Antonio, in Wilson County. Both La Vernia ISD or the La Vernia police refused to comment on the allegations. La Vernia ISD opened to in-person learning on the first day of school with roughly 75 percent of the enrolled students face to face. Integrity, transparency and communication are the foundations to be successful at La Vernia, Cone said. “La Vernia is a great place they have great kids a great staff and community, and good things are happening," he said.

Fans to face new safety measures at high school football games this season
LA VERNIA, Texas High school football under the lights on a Friday night. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, school districts are having to take extra precautions to protect the players, coaches, staff and fans who hope to enjoy this weekly tradition. La Vernia ISD Director of Safety and Security Michael Duffek said the UIL has provided guidance on what districts can do. Police, much like La Vernia ISD, decline to release records related to former superintendent
LA VERNIA, Texas – The La Vernia Police Department on Monday declined to release copies of criminal complaints against Dr. Trent Lovette, the former superintendent for La Vernia Independent School District who resigned late last year while under investigation for inappropriate work behavior. La Vernia ISD yet to hand over text messages of former superintendent, despite AG’s rulingThe Defenders originally asked for preliminary information from the criminal complaints against Lovette last year, but officials in La Vernia said they never received the email because it was addressed incorrectly. The school district, through its attorney, has instead told KSAT 12 that the station must pay $1,621 to inspect the records, including paying a deposit of $810.50. KSAT 12 filed a complaint late last year with the attorney general’s office, claiming the cost estimate to view the records is excessive. It is our intention to ensure all students feel comfortable and safe while attending La Vernia ISD and will always support students when they voice their concerns,” said La Vernia ISD secretary Jeff Towns as he read from a prepared statement Nov. 18.

Crews battle large brush fire in Wilson County
WILSON COUNTY, Texas – Crews in Wilson County battled a large brush fire Wednesday in northern Wilson County near La Vernia. The fire broke out around 1 p.m. along County Road 539. No burn ban in Bexar County this New Year’s EveNo homes appear to be in immediate danger of the blaze. There was no immediate word what caused the fire.
La Vernia ISD teacher fired after allegations of inappropriate texting with student surface
LA VERNIA, Texas – A La Vernia Junior High School teacher and coach has been fired after allegedly engaging in inappropriate texting with a student, the district's interim superintendent said in a letter to parents Monday. The La Vernia Independent School District said Joseph McIntosh was immediately removed from campus after the allegations came to light. He is also not allowed to have any contact with students or staff members or enter any of the district facilities, according to La Vernia ISD. Local law enforcement officials are investigating the allegation.
Two defendants take plea deals in 2017 La Vernia High hazing case
LA VERNIA, Texas - Two defendants took plea deals Friday in the La Vernia High School athletics hazing case that was exposed in 2017 after a student made an outcry that they were sexually assaulted. Both defendants were given deferred adjudication to the charge of unlawful restraint. They will be placed on community supervision for five years. The sentence includes several requirements, including community service, a fee and drug and alcohol evaluations. Earlier this summer, four former La Vernia High School students previously charged with sexual assault in connection with the scandal were also indicted on charges of engaging in organized criminal activity.
La Vernia superintendent to take medical leave of absence after school board approval
LA VERNIA, Texas - The La Vernia Independent School District will temporarily be under the supervision of an interim superintendent after the school board granted a medical leave of absence for Dr. Trent Lovette on Monday. LA VERNIA, Texas - The future of the La Vernia Independent School District superintendent remains unknown. The school board held its regular meeting Monday night. On the agenda was possible action regarding the evaluation of the superintendent, Dr. Trent Lovette, after a string of allegations against him involving inappropriate behavior surfaced earlier this month. A district spokesman said the district is still gathering information about the allegations before deciding Lovette's future. Lovette became superintendent in 2018 after the previous superintendent resigned following an athletic hazing scandal involving reports of sexual assaults among students.
