Giving to top charities rose 3.7% in 2020, driven by wealthy
In the wake of the most devastating public-health emergency in a century and the resulting economic uncertainty, Americans provided more charitable dollars to United Way Worldwide than any other nonprofit focused on direct aid, followed by the Salvation Army and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, according to new rankings by the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The food distribution will take place from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. outside the Salvation Army’s Mission Corps facility located at 3802 SW Military Drive. Grocery items are expected to include fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, beef, chicken, non-perishable items and bottled water, according to the organization’s news release. The organization expects to serve about 300 households on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last, according to the Salvation Army, which added that an on-site registration will be conducted.

San Antonio city officials said the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center will remain open through Friday as a warming center. Southside ISD opened up a 24-hour warming center at Losoya Middle School Gym, at 1610 Martinez Losoya Road. The City of New Braunfels will also provide a warming center at the New Braunfels Civic and Convention Center at 375 South Castell Ave. To find the closest warming shelter, please use the map here or for information on additional assistance and resources call 2-1-1.
Some San Antonio shelters forced to turn people away amid plunging temperatures due to limited space

Local organizations and church groups, such as Last Chance Ministries, have opened their doors to provide comfort during frigid nights. Jamie Llamas, a community organizer with Last Chance Ministries, said she immediately planned to assist the community as soon as she heard the weather forecast. The Salvation Army will be giving away blankets and cold-weather gear to those it cannot accept in the shelter due to limited space. Last Chance Ministries said it would be housing folks and providing shelter until the cold weather subsides.
Donations soar but nonprofits still struggle with pandemic
Despite record amounts of charitable donations this year, nonprofits across the country are being suffocated by the effects of the pandemic. December is typically the most important month for nonprofit revenues, as Christmas and end-of-year tax deductions drive a flood of charitable giving. That’s a $60 million drop for the iconic fundraising drive being crippled by the pandemic in numerous ways. Fidelity Charitable said it has distributed 32% more grants and seen a 20% increase in people setting up investment accounts for charitable giving this year. The national advocacy group projects 12,000 arts and cultural nonprofits are at risk of being wiped out forever.

Salvation Army has a ‘great need’ for paid, volunteer bell ringers in San Antonio, New Braunfels
SAN ANTONIO – With the holiday season nearly in full swing, the Salvation Army is facing a shortage of bell ringers for their annual Red Kettle Campaign. “We have a great need for volunteer and paid bell ringers, especially volunteers,” he said, adding that many have yet to find a full-time bell ringer. Paid positions start at $10 and they are available in San Antonio and New Braunfels. For more information about paid positions, call 210-352-2000. Due to the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Red Kettle Campaign will begin a week early on Nov. 21.
Salvation Army reports blanket shortage: Can you help?
SAN ANTONIO – If anyone’s looking for a good deed to do as we wrap up a challenging 2020, the Salvation Army is asking for donations of new blankets for its emergency family shelter, the organization announced this week. As cooler temperatures have made their way to San Antonio, the Salvation Army’s shelter’s blanket supply is now depleted, according to the organization. The supply had been lower than usual in recent months because of fewer donations. Due to COVID concerns, the organization is only able to accept new items at this time. The Salvation Army has been serving the San Antonio community since 1889, providing emergency shelter and transitional housing for men, women and families experiencing homelessness.

SAN ANTONIO – A mobile canteen truck belonging to the Salvation Army of San Antonio was involved in a rollover crash while en route to Louisiana to provide help for victims of Hurricane Laura. “Most importantly, we are thankful that our volunteers are safe,” Salvation Army Area Commander Major Carolynn Webb said. Also, the San Antonio unit had been used frequently to serve meals to individuals impacted by COVID-19. SAN ANTONIO The Salvation Army announced on Wednesday that staff members and volunteers from San Antonio would be heading to Southeast Texas, prepared to help people affected by Hurricane Laura. According to the organization, San Antonio is one of five additional Texas sites that have prepared trucks for standby should additional support be needed. Director of the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services in Texas Alvin Migues said deployed staffers and volunteers have the experience to face the natural disaster head-on. The Incident Command Team members provide leadership in all areas of disaster response including safety, operations, logistics, finance, planning and communication, Migues said. We have established protocols specifically to address responding to disaster during the current pandemic, Migues said.

SAN ANTONIO – When the coronavirus pandemic hit South Texas, the Salvation Army of San Antonio worked quickly to ensure its shelter residents would be safe. “We’re not taking the traffic indoors, so we’ve moved our canteen truck outside,” said Brad Mayhar, spokesperson for the Salvation Army of San Antonio. “When people donate through our local Salvation Army web site, the money stays local and it helps our local programs here in San Antonio,” said Mayhar.
