Parts of Guadalupe River Lakes Reopen After Safety Report Released
Portions of four lakes on the Guadalupe River in Guadalupe and Gonzales counties are open again, with some areas near the dams still restricted after a panel of engineers weighed in on dam safety. The areas the panel deemed unsafe are much less extensive than those proposed by the Guadalupe Blanco-River Authority earlier this year when it said the lakes would have to be drained. Understanding that nowhere in, on, or immediately adjacent to the water can be deemed 100 percent safe, the report affirms the prohibited areas already established surrounding the dams and extends protections by outlining additional restricted areas, GBRA officials said in a prepared statement. The portions of the lakes not deemed prohibited or restricted automatically reopened when the panel released its report, according to the GBRA. Coody-Anders said shes been impressed with the lakefront associations leadership for engaging experts to help them understand how to best keep the lakes full.
therivardreport.comCourt hearing continues Monday that could determine whether GBRA can drain lakes
Property owners are requesting a temporary injunction to keep the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority from draining Lake McQueeney, Lake Placid, Meadow Lake, and Lake Gonzales. The hearing over whether to grant a temporary injunction began last Wednesday and might last into the week. Two other lakes held back by similar hydroelectric dams - Lake Wood in 2016 and Lake Dunlap in May - have already emptied because of spill gate failures. Lawsuits filed to prevent draining of GBRA lakesTwo separate lawsuits filed by property owners looking to prevent the drainage are part of the joint hearing. A temporary injunction would keep the lakes from being drained pending a trial.
Draining of four lakes along Guadalupe River delayed
SAN ANTONIO - A judge put a temporary halt Wednesday to the draining of four lakes along the Guadalupe River. The draining was scheduled for Monday but the judge halted it until he issues a ruling, which won't happen until at least next week. The judge heard arguments in Guadalupe County from lawyers representing residents who live along the lakes and the Guadalupe Blanco River Authority. The river authority believes the dams on those lakes create a safety hazard after spillgate failures at Lake Wood and Lake Dunlap. Murphy testified the river authority made some moves regarding water rights that resulted in losing leverage to secure funding for the dams.
Lawsuit filed in connection with man's drowning in Guadalupe River
SAN ANTONIO - The family of a 31-year-old man who drowned in the Guadalupe River claim that Rockin' R Rides river outfitters and Huaco Springs recreation area should have posted signs warning of sharp drop-offs in the area where they were having a summer picnic in July. Alleging negligence, the family of the drowning victim, Roberto Celis, have filed a lawsuit. The lawsuit said there were no warning signs posted about the water was running swift, a strong undercurrent and drop-offs. Since Celis' parents are from Mexico, the lawsuit was filed under a provision called Federal Diversity. Telephone calls and emails sent to the defendants in the lawsuit seeking a statement were not returned to KSAT 12 News.
