SEL BATTLE LURKS

Social-emotional learning, or SEL, addresses children’s feelings and interpersonal skills as they learn. A variety of programs integrate SEL into the curriculum to help students build self-awareness and self-management, improve responsible decision-making and develop relationship skills. Some educators also use SEL to help children process their feelings in an effort to reduce rising suicide rates. In Oklahoma, a state senator in February introduced a bill that would bar schools from using funds for SEL education.

Some Black parents say remote learning gives racism reprieve

“This is the kind of area we live in, so you can imagine that you’re always going to feel protective of your children.” As schools reopen across the country, Black students have been less likely than white students to enroll in in-person learning — a trend attributed to factors including concerns about the disproportionate impact of the coronavirus on communities of color, a lack of trust that their schools are equipped to keep children safe, and the large numbers of students of color in urban districts that have been slower to reopen classrooms. “Now that they’re home, we feel safer,” said Johnson, who was keeping her two young daughters home despite options being made available for in-person learning.

US schools prepare summer of learning to help kids catch up

Schools and camps across the county are making plans to help kids catch up academically this summer after a year or more of remote learning for many of them. Several governors, including in California, Kansas and Virginia, are pushing for more summer learning. Many cities, meanwhile, are talking about beefing up their summer school programs, including Los Angeles, Hartford, Connecticut and Atlanta — the latter of which considered making summer school compulsory before settling for strongly recommending that kids who are struggling take part. The new $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package should help, as it allocates $122 billion in aid to K-12 public schools, including $30 billion specifically for summer school, after-school and other enrichment programs. The influx of money and increase in summer offerings has come as a relief to parents of kids who struggled with remote learning during the coronavirus pandemic.

Adult literacy: the hidden crisis in plain sight

CHICAGO – It’s a crisis hidden in plain sight, as about 20 percent of people in the United States cannot read at all and 50 percent of adults can’t read to pass an eighth-grade level. “People who can’t read have all kinds of troubles in life that you might not even think of,” Joanne Telser-Frere, Director of Program Development at Literacy Chicago told Ivanhoe. That’s why Joanne is part of Literacy Chicago, an organization whose mission it is to empower adults through reading. “People often need someone to tell them they can do it, because their whole life they’ve been told they can’t,” Joanne said. Literacy Chicago classes are free to students.
