SPI announces attractions for McAllen Holiday Parade
The city of McAllen is highlighting its partnership with South Padre Island as part of the upcoming holiday celebrations. South Padre Island will continue its presence in the McAllen Holiday Parade this year with the return of its giant helium balloon as well as the debut of its own float, the city announced in a joint news conference with McAllen officials. Ridley the Sea Turtle, SPI’s featured balloon, will return to the McAllen parade this year in tribute to the island’s own tradition. “Like the McAllen parade, South Padre Island has a winter tradition also,” said Randy Smith, city manager of South Padre Island. SAN ANTONIO – Santa is making a list and checking it twice, but he’ll only really have treats for pets in shelters in San Antonio. According to the San Antonio Humane Society, the fifth annual “Holiday dinner by the Ranch,” is meant to spread holiday cheer to pets in the shelter. The event kicks off at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 16 at the San Antonio Humane Society, 4804 Fredericksburg Road, and features pets ready to find their forever homes. “Shelter puppies dress up and unwrap special gifts from Santa himself,” the organization said in a statement. Santa and his elves rappel down windows at San Antonio hospital
SAN ANTONIO – With wide eyes and joyous smiles all around, pediatric patients at Methodist Children’s Hospital got a special visit Friday from Santa and his elves. To make sure everyone was at a safe distance, Santa rappelled down the sides of the hospital and met with the kids through their windows. This socially-distanced visit from Santa and his elves really boosted the children’s holiday spirits, according to Whitlock. “It brought our spirits up a lot knowing they could see Santa, even though Santa couldn’t come in and see them. They were still able to experience this either outside their windows or on the hospital televisions,” she said.

SAN ANTONIO – For 17 years, Home Instead Senior Care has put together the “Be a Santa to a Senior,” program which allows community members to buy a Christmas gift for someone living in an assisted living facility. “The best way is to go to beasantatoasenior.com and enter your ZIP code and it will take you right to the Amazon business sit,” Home Instead Senior Care general manager Jackie Robb said. A partnership with Amazon allowed for easy and safe ways to give gifts to the seniors. “Whatever you want to do and it makes a difference in that person’s day,” Robb said. This year the program is looking to give gets to over 450 seniors in San Antonio and surrounding areas.

Moreno explains that Operation Santa has been around for years, but only in certain cities digitally. “In 1912 post master Frank Hitchcock allowed post masters and their employees and community to adopt letters, so we have continued on the tradition and it is now known as Operation Santa,” Moreno said. It allows children to write letters to Santa, and the USPS will post those letters on its Operation Santa website, where people can adopt letters and send children gifts. USPS delivers new Christmas movie that’s sure to spark some holiday joy
SAN ANTONIO – The United States Postal Service and its 100-year-old ‘Operation Santa’ program is the subject of a new documentary-style movie set to come out on Dec. 4. The new movie sheds light on a tradition like no other: the fulfillment of wishes from children writing to Santa. According to USPS, hundreds of thousands of letters are sent to Santa from children and families across the country every year. The agency’s Operation Santa makes it possible for individuals and organizations to adopt these letters and send responses and thoughtful gifts in Santa’s place. The movie debuts Dec. 4, the same day that letter adoption opens in the program.

Gibson Costume Shop has been open for about 100 years in San Antonio. The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Halloween hours will be extended for October.
