Photos: Two male penguins successfully incubate foster chick at SeaWorld San Antonio

Two male penguins at SeaWorld San Antonio are raising a chick of a different penguin species together, park officials said. It isn't uncommon for penguins to foster an egg, but it is less common that it is a same-sex pair, said SeaWorld aviculturist Jason Medina. In the SeaWorld San Antonio habitat, penguins are tracked with identification numbers so keepers can monitor and watch for behavioral patterns. "Most new pairs tend to lose their eggs and it takes a few seasons before they successfully incubate an egg." A pair of penguins has to sit on the eggs to incubate the chick while also protecting it from predators and the cold.

SeaWorld welcomes newborn sea lion pup

SeaWorld San Antonio welcomed the first sea lion of the 2019 pinniped pupping season, it announced Friday. The new sea lion was delivered June 18 by Rachel, a 4-year-old California sea lion, at SeaWorlds Pacific Point Preserve seal and sea lion habitat. The pup will graduate to a solid diet of fish after nursing for anywhere from five months to a year. Though the pup is the first of the year, park officials said more sea lion births are expected throughout the summer. Until then, guests can look at the new pup with its mother as it learns to swim and integrate into the social structure at the parks Pacific Point Preserve habitat.
