What is Doppler radar and how does it work? KSAT Explains
Meteorologists and weather experts in South Texas rely heavily on Doppler radar technology, but how does it work? How can a giant soccer-ball-shaped tower, known as the radome, detect clouds hundreds of miles away and send them to a computer as rain?
Lake levels low around South Central Texas after year of drought
Even though Medina Lake is only 43% full, it is notorious for fluctuations. After the devastating 2011 drought, Medina Lake dried up almost completely through 2015, leaving people skeptical if the lake would ever fill up again. Meteorologist Justin Horne took a trip out to Medina Lake in 2014 to show the drastically low water levels which at times was only 3% full. At the time, the Medina Lake Spillway overtopped as heavy rains fell across South Texas. โMedina Lake has a small watershed and is used for agriculture, making it more susceptible to large fluctuations,โ said Horne.

Was Sunday nightโs storm damage from straight-line winds or a tornado?
SAN ANTONIO โ Editorโs note: The National Weather Service determined that an EF1 tornado with up to 100 mph winds was likely. On Sunday night, both severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings were ongoing around San Antonio after 7 p.m., when a squall line moved through the KSAT12 viewing area. Therefore, it can be difficult to determine whether any storm damage is technically from a tornado or straight-line wind gusts -- especially when squall lines occur at night. Our local Austin/San Antonio Weather Service office is currently in the process of determining when and if they will conduct a survey. In fact, another squall line is expected late Monday with a risk for damaging gusts and flooding.

203 sea turtles rescued in single day along Texas coast
Texas โ An incredible 203 cold-stunned sea turtles were documented and rescued along the Texas coast on Wednesday, including more than 50 in Corpus Christiโs Packery Channel, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife. Sea turtles become cold-stunned, rendering them unable to swim, when water temperatures drop to about 50 degrees or below. The Padre Island National Seashore Division of Sea Turtle Science and Recovery warned that more turtles could be found Thursday and cautioned boaters to look out for floating, lethargic sea turtles. Cold-stunned turtles might wash ashore or become stranded, often dying of exposure or predation, if theyโre not rescued quickly. More information about cold-stunned sea turtles can be found here.
