Big cats seized from Bexar County home were not properly cared for, San Antonio zoo says
Fish & Wildlife are investigating the recent cases involving big cats seized and spotted in Bexar County-area neighborhoods this month. The big cats taken by authorities were not in good health, said Tim Morrow, president and CEO of the San Antonio Zoo. Thatโs not normal.โAdThe animals will be cared for by the San Antonio Zoo until they are sent to an animal sanctuary, Morrow said. A month ago, a tiger cub was also taken from a home in southwest Bexar County. If enacted, the bill would make it illegal to own tiger petting facilities and exotic big cats.
San Antonio Zoo takes in confiscated tiger cub, bobcat

New Dragon Forest experience opens at San Antonio Zoo
SAN ANTONIO โ For the first time, the San Antonio Zoo is utilizing its property on the west side of 281 for its new attraction, โDragon Forest.โThis new immersive experience features 15 different dragons in an enchanted land. San Antonio doctor raising funds to provide lunches for volunteers at Alamodome vaccine site
A San Antonio doctor is raising funds to provide daily lunches to the 150 volunteers at the Alamodome COVID vaccine site. Through that mission, Dr. Francisco Arredondo is also aiming to help local restaurants and the San Antonio Zoo by providing them business during the pandemic-caused shutdown. โRestaurants including Fraloโs Pizza and a local Subway have already pitched in with discounted meals, just as San Antonio Zooโs catering team did this weekend,โ Arredondo said in a statement. This collective effort to make sure everyone is vaccinated is the first step to constructing a new way of life. Animals free to roam between Savanna habitats for first time in San Antonio Zoo history
SAN ANTONIO โ Itโs a first in the 106-year history of the San Antonio Zoo - the rhinos now have access to the entirely redesigned Savanna and can roam the giraffe yard. The zooโs Savanna exhibit is home to giraffes, zebras, ostriches, rhinoceroses, and other African species. Thanks to a redesign effort that started in 2015, the animals are now free to roam between two previously-separated habitats thanks to the Savanna Crossing. The crossing is a connection point between the two Savanna habitats that has been in use for decades for vehicle access, zoo officials said. The two rhinos who call San Antonio Zoo home, Reyna and West, were given access through the crossing on Monday and were โjust peekingโ before having explored the entire area by Tuesday, officials said.
San Antonio Zoo, SeaWorld featured in new Helen Mirren-narrated documentary โEscape From Extinctionโ
SAN ANTONIO โ The San Antonio Zoo and SeaWorld are featured in a new conservation documentary called โEscape From Extinctionโ which is narrated by Academy Award Winner Helen Mirren. American Humaneโs inaugural feature-length documentary shows the efforts being taken by accredited zoos and aquariums to preserve millions of species threatened with mass extinction, according to San Antonio Zoo officials. โSan Antonio is home to two zoological institutions that are significantly contributing to the conservation of wildlife,โ said SeaWorld San Antonio spokesperson Chuck Cureau. Proceeds from the 90-minute documentary will go back to American Humane, helping to further its vital work to protect animals around the world, according to documentary officials.

SAN ANTONIO โ The annual San Antonio Zoo Boo event is back and just in time for all things fall and Halloween. Zoo Boo is included with standard zoo admission and is free for annual pass holders and zoo members. Starting Sept. 18, the zoo is kicking off the Drive-Thru Zoo Boo, which will be running on select dates through Oct. 30. Teachers get in free at San Antonio Zoo all month long
SAN ANTONIO August is Teacher Appreciation Month at the San Antonio Zoo with free admission for teachers all month long. Teachers will receive free standard admission for themselves plus 50% off for up to four guests on the day they visit. To qualify, the teacher must be an active employee at any school district in the state and present a valid form of school ID like a copy of a teaching certificate or pay stub. Teachers change lives and we look forward to celebrating them all month long, San Antonio Zoo President and CEO Tim Morrow said.

San Antonio Kiddie Park to reopen this month
SAN ANTONIO The historical San Antonio Kiddie Park, originally opened in 1925, is set to reopen its gates on June 19. Kiddie Park hours will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and unlimited rides wristbands will be available for $12.
San Antonio Zoo forced to furlough majority of staff members due to closure
SAN ANTONIO โ The San Antonio Zoo announced Friday it was forced to furlough a majority of staff members. โAs a nonprofit cultural institution, San Antonio Zoo is entirely dependent on visitation, grants, and donations to operate. The Zoo Train and Starbucks will continue to operate in Brackenridge Park with new social distancing procedures, zoo officials said. โOur zoo crew is our family, and we are assisting everyone affected to obtain governmental assistance and or other jobs within our community. We look forward to brighter days ahead and welcoming our team and guests back to the zoo once we can reopen to the public.
