The San Antonio Zoo has taken in a tiger cub and bobcat that were confiscated by the Bexar County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday.The zoo estimates the tiger is roughly 14 weeks of age and the bobcat is around 5 years old. It will provide safe housing and veterinarian care for both animals until it receives further instructions from BCSO.According to a release, the zoo's animal care and veterinarian staff visually assessed both animals and found them to be in poor condition, which they said is likely due to malnutrition and poor general care. "Illegal animal trafficking is a global problem, and obviously San Antonio is not immune to this," President and CEO Tim Morrow said in a statement. "We're grateful to Sheriff [Javier] Salazar, his officers, Animal Care Services and San Antonio Police for their work on these cases and for aggressively prosecuting those committing animal cruelty in our community."

San Antonio doctor raising funds to provide lunches for volunteers at Alamodome vaccine site
A San Antonio doctor is raising funds to provide daily lunches to the 150 volunteers at the Alamodome COVID vaccine site. Through that mission, Dr. Francisco Arredondo is also aiming to help local restaurants and the San Antonio Zoo by providing them business during the pandemic-caused shutdown. “Restaurants including Fralo’s Pizza and a local Subway have already pitched in with discounted meals, just as San Antonio Zoo’s catering team did this weekend,” Arredondo said in a statement. This collective effort to make sure everyone is vaccinated is the first step to constructing a new way of life. The San Antonio Zoo is making a splash after a video of their unofficial mascot Timothy the Hippo went viral. On Thursday, the zoo posted a video of Timothy, who decided he would rather "dolphin than hippo" as he playfully swam around his encounter, seemingly trying to impress his onlookers. Timothy swam in circles and then leaped out of the water before diving back to the bottom. Several comments on Instagram suggested Timothy wasn't leaping for joy, but because he was in distress and trying to escape. Morrow disregarded the negative comments, saying Timothy is playing like a young, active hippo should be.

During the annual Zoo Lights, kids have the chance to take photos with Santa, but 3-year-old Jayden did not want any part of it. Instead of smiling for a photo, he played dead, said zoo president Tim Morrow. "It was probably the funniest thing I have ever seen," Morrow said. SAN ANTONIO – It’s a first in the 106-year history of the San Antonio Zoo - the rhinos now have access to the entirely redesigned Savanna and can roam the giraffe yard. The zoo’s Savanna exhibit is home to giraffes, zebras, ostriches, rhinoceroses, and other African species. Thanks to a redesign effort that started in 2015, the animals are now free to roam between two previously-separated habitats thanks to the Savanna Crossing. The crossing is a connection point between the two Savanna habitats that has been in use for decades for vehicle access, zoo officials said. The two rhinos who call San Antonio Zoo home, Reyna and West, were given access through the crossing on Monday and were “just peeking” before having explored the entire area by Tuesday, officials said.

The facility was home to hyenas through 2014 and has gained the knowledge and experience to care for animals, which play a major role in Africa's ecosystem. However, zookeepers know that one is known that one is turning four years old next month and the other is seven.

Historic sculptured bench near San Antonio Zoo damaged in hail storm
SAN ANTONIO A historic bench outside the San Antonio Zoo has been damaged after a felled pecan tree landed on it during a severe hail storm Wednesday night. The bench was created by world-renowned artist Dionicio Rodriguez - a Mexican citizen who came to San Antonio in 1924, according to Patsy Pittman Light who wrote a biography about the artist. The bench isnt the only sculpture Rodriguez contributed to San Antonio, he built the entrance gate to the Japanese Tea Garden in addition to a plethora of other works. That gate, and fourteen other Rodriguez artworks are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, according to a report from Texas Public Radio. Commission Delays Vote on Garage Signage as Conservancy, Zoo Clash
While the new parking garage in Brackenridge Park has been open since October, the finishing touches signage and other design features are the subject of a dispute between the San Antonio Zoo and the Brackenridge Park Conservancy. St. Mary's into a unique Starbucks location that will open to both visitors and the general public, as well as local students and the business community.Plans for the new Starbucks follow the nearly $40 million in improvements by the San Antonio Zoological Society since 2014. Jordan Foster Construction will begin renovating the Train Caf space in the coming weeks, while the new Starbucks is slated to officially open before the end of 2019.The proceeds from this Starbucks will enable and benefit the zoological societys efforts in both local and international conservation, education, and in zoo improvements, stated Tim Morrow, President & CEO of San Antonio Zoological Society.The Zoo previously sold brewed by Starbucks coffee at their on-site Beastro Restaurant , but the new location promises to be a major upgrade for caffeine lovers.

Crews taking down Kiddie Park rides for move to San Antonio Zoo
Crews were seen Thursday taking down rides at the Kiddie Park near downtown in anticipation of the park's relocation to the San Antonio Zoo. Zoo officials announced in April that they would partner with the owners of the Kiddie Park to move the attraction near the front gates of the zoo. The zoo previously said tickets to the zoo would not be required to visit the Kiddie Park when it's relocated. The San Antonio Zoo also works with researchers at Kansas State to track and study their migration patterns. This marks the third edition of the Conserveza beer can design.
