Experts: Virus numbers could be erratic after Thanksgiving
MILWAUKEE โ The coronavirus testing numbers that have guided much of the nation's response to the pandemic are likely to be erratic over the next week or so, experts said Friday, as fewer people get tested during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and testing sites observe shorter hours. Because some testing centers, labs and state offices are closed on Saturdays and Sundays, COVID case numbers often drop each Sunday and Monday, only to peak on Tuesday. The Thursday holiday will exacerbate the record-keeping discrepancies over the long weekend, artificially depressing the reported numbers for four or five days before spiking as test results catch up. The latter number, as well as positive case numbers, which had dropped by about a third Friday, could be adjusted as more results are returned. But the public is more likely to look at testing numbers or case counts, which might be misleading, Wen said, and waiting until hospitals are overwhelmed is risky.
โIโm praying that next year is going to be betterโ: Cancellation of Operation Home Cooking this year saddens longtime host
SAN ANTONIO โ Leaders across the U.S. urged Americans to scale back their Thanksgiving family gatherings during the pandemic. San Antonio Thanksgiving tradition pivots to doorstep deliveries due to pandemic
SAN ANTONIO โ Not even a pandemic could stop the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner this year, but it did need to pivot from a crowded ballroom filled with food and festivities at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center to doorstep deliveries. A spokeswoman said Corazon Ministries and SAMM Ministries also picked up meals to distribute to the cityโs homeless population. โYouโd be amazed by what happens when people come together for the right reasons,โ said Raul Jimenez III, the founderโs grandson. The event started in 1979 by his grandfather, a restaurant owner and businessman, to provide seniors and anyone else in need the Thanksgiving dinners they wouldnโt otherwise have. The long-standing tradition involves serving up 25,000 meals at the Convention Center.
Tips on how to cook the perfect Thanksgiving turkey
If you have been given the big responsibility of cooking the turkey this year and you donโt want to dry out your bird, listen up. Make sure you let your turkey air dry for a couple of days in the fridge before you cook it. If you do decide to roast your turkey, roast it upside down. Roasting the bird upside down for the first half of the cooking time allows for the juices to sink into the turkey breast. Melt half a pound a butter to brush onto your turkey and sprinkle a bit of sea salt on it.
Donโt be a sad statistic of โDrinksgivingโ
The night before Thanksgiving has slowly turned into something some law enforcement agencies are calling โDrinksgivingโ. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the night before Thanksgiving is becoming even more deadly than New Yearโs Eve. The NHTSA says one reason for the increase is because some bars and restaurants offer Blackout Wednesday drink specials. Along with being responsible with alcohol, Texas Department of Public Safety officials say to eliminate distractions while driving, including the use of mobile devices. You also need to move over or slow down for police, fire, ems, Texas Department of Transportation vehicles and tow trucks that are stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated.
