After 18 years of law enforcement in Kirby, including the past 11 as its leader, Police Chief Kevin Bois has served his final days in the city before retirement. One day, then-Kirby City Manager Zina Tedford called him, he said, and made an offer. “She recruited me to be a lieutenant, holding down the fort for the time until she could hire a chief,” Bois said. Former City Councilwoman Kimberly McGehee-Aldrich is running for mayor and is being opposed by Kirby resident Christopher Garza. Three current Kirby city council members are running for election. Joining the current council members on the May ballot are three challengers: Donahue Gibson, Sidney Sanders Sr. and Susan Street. As snow came down again Thursday morning, most - but not all- CPS customers had their power restored. With the forced outage strategy CPS had been following to keep the Texas grid stable suspended, close to 99% of customers had power again. Kirby is looking for a new fire chief after accepting the resignation of former chief Glenn Levy in January. Robbers fire AR-15 at Houston couple before stealing their French bulldog, police say
HOUSTON – The owners of a two-and-a-half-year-old French bulldog named Kirby are happy to have their beloved pet back home after he was taken during a violent armed robbery in Houston. As KPRC first reported, the crime occurred around 5:30 p.m. Saturday in a Houston neighborhood near downtown. According to the victim, one of the men was armed with an AR-15, KPRC reported. Council, school board seats part of May election
As the spotlight begins to fade on the long, drawn-out national election cycle, cities and school districts in the area are ready to hand out applications for council and trustee positions for the May 1 general election. Along with the mayor’s position on the Kirby ballot will be at-large seats held by Mayor Pro Tem Kimberly McGehee-Aldrich, and Councilmen Mike Grant and Thomas Hernandez. SAN ANTONIO – One person is in custody after a high-speed chase ended in a three-vehicle crash in Northeast Bexar County Thursday morning. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said the chase started after an SUV was stolen around 7:30 a.m. in Kirby. AC firm 'gifts' HVAC system to animal shelter
Kirby animal shelter employees attended the city’s Dec. 17 City Council meeting expecting to hear about the cost of installing a heating system for the shelter’s large dog kennel area. Sitting in the audience waiting to hear the cost — and to gauge the council’s reaction — was Kirby animal control officer Ashley St. Denis. Jon Wayne representatives surprised the shelter employees with the announcement on Thursday and were hard at work the next morning, installing the complete $15,000 HVAC system. While Jon Wayne representatives were on a visit, he said shelter workers inquired about putting AC and heat into the kennel area. Kirby man faces capital murder charge in connection with child abuse case from 2015
KIRBY, Texas – Five years after his father severely beat him, a Kirby boy has died, and his father now faces a capital murder charge, police say. The 38-year old man was convicted of child abuse in 2019 and sentenced to three years in prison. But he says child abuse happens everywhere and urges parents to seek help or step back if they feel frustrated with their child. Two men sought in Kirby convenience store robbery, police say
KIRBY, Texas – Kirby police are looking for two men they say held up a convenience store on April 3. Police said two armed men entered the S&K Food Mart store and pointed a gun at a clerk at the register, demanding cash. The men fled in a vehicle driven by an unknown individual, police said. City of Kirby explores possible boundary expansion
KIRBY, Texas – Kirby council members have asked staff to crunch numbers to assess the pros and cons of a boundary expansion in the future. The city, which has a population of about 8,300 people and is two-square miles, says it needs to find more revenue sources. City leaders are asking to see if there is any financial benefits to current residents and to the future of the city if it expands. The city is surrounded by San Antonio and Bexar County. The City of Converse already has a plan that will expand its boundary closer to the City of Kirby by 2033.

SAN ANTONIO – Officials with the Kirby Fire Department are investigating the cause of a blaze that ripped through a converted garage Friday morning. Firefighters were called just before 7 a.m. to a house in the 4800 block of Scott Carpenter Drive, according to an assistant chief with KFD at the scene. At first, firefighters were not sure where the fire was located until they found flames inside a converted garage, officials said. Everyone inside the home was able to exit and no one was injured. Arson investigators were called to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

Longtime Fire Chief and Hobo Fest co-organizer Kevin Riedel retired at the end of 2016, earning the distinction of having the towns fire station named after him in 2018. KIRBY, Texas - A Kirby soldier said his family got some justice Thursday when Judge Jennifer Pena handed the woman who struck him and left him for dead a 10-year prison sentence. Marisa Ross pleaded no contest to the charge of failure to render aid and asked the judge to decide her sentence. Ross told the judge she thought she hit a curb in the morning of Aug. 21, 2017. Matthew Belknap was on his bicycle on his way to work at Brook Army Military Medical Center when Ross hit him. Katie Belknap said she feels sorry for Ross' family, but no one wanted to see the reality of the actions that Ross' took.
