In Texas last year over Spring Break, there were 872 DUI-alcohol related traffic accidents, resulting in 30 fatalities and 107 serious injuries, TxDOT officials say. The new anti-drunk driving campaign will conduct outreach events on college campuses and at key spring break designations using public service announcements, outdoor billboards and more. One person in Texas dies every eight hours and 31 minutes in a DUI-alcohol related traffic crash, TxDOT data shows. “These are disturbing numbers, especially as all of these crashes are preventable,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams.myrgv.com

TABC agents go undercover to keep alcohol away from minors during spring break
SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is working to keep alcohol away from underage people this spring break by having undercover agents visit liquor stores, bars and other locations where alcohol is sold to ensure laws are followed. With the statewide coronavirus restrictions lifted, agents with TABC will be busy this spring break. AdPorter said that, in years past, the agents conducted anywhere between 1,000 and 1,500 inspections statewide during spring break. “Of those, we generally see about a 95% to 98% compliance rate statewide, including at places like liquor stores and convenience stores,” Porter said. The agency said businesses that sell alcohol to people younger than 21 could face a civil fine or suspension of their license to sell alcohol.

San Antonio animal shelters offer free, discounted adoption fees for ‘big mutts’ during spring break
SAN ANTONIO – The Animal Defense League and San Antonio Humane Society are offering adoption specials for “big mutts” this spring break. ADL spokesperson Michelle Thorson said pets over 40 pounds will have their adoption fees waived through March 14. Instead, the animal shelter is asking for a monetary donation to help support the program and pets in need. At the San Antonio Humane Society, the “I Like Big Mutts and I Cannot Lie” special is offering a $25 adoption fee for large dogs that are at least 1 year old. Aquatica San Antonio opening to guests just in time for spring break
SAN ANTONIO – Aquatica San Antonio at SeaWorld will reopen just in time for spring break. Waterpark officials said it will be open from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. starting Saturday through Sunday, March 14. UIW cancels study abroad trip to Italy, urges precaution for other international travel
SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word has suspended a faculty-led study abroad trip to Italy in light of a coronavirus outbreak in that country, and school officials are urging others to consider the CDC’s travel warnings before making plans to travel internationally. UIW officials also sent a message to student and faculty about international travel plans during Spring Break. They were also encouraged to “evaluate non-essential travel throughout the Asia region during the Spring semester.”Students from China were asked to contact the Office of International Services to advise of international travel plans in advance. The residence and dining halls will be open and fully operational during Spring Break for students staying on or near campus.
