SAN ANTONIO – The North East Independent School District had its share of water lines that burst, but the costliest damage to the city’s second largest school district was to four large chillers at three of its schools. “Some of those chillers just froze over, broke and have to be replaced, unfortunately,” said NEISD spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor. Normally used for air conditioning systems, the chillers affected were at Churchill High School, Bush Middle School and Garner Middle School. “We had so many wonderful, wonderful maintenance staff, custodians, everyone who left their own families at home,” she said. “When it’s all said and done, we’re probably looking at about two million.”Chancellor said the school district is covered by insurance, but it has a $100,000 deductible.

SAN ANTONIO – As students continue to adjust amid the pandemic, a North East ISD librarian says social and emotional learning is still essential for students. When the school year started, Wright said she created different kits for students. Wright said that making the kits for the students led her to create a social-emotional learning section at the library. “So, those are the things that help me to understand that there’s a need.”Wright said there is also a section for teachers with books that can help incorporate social emotional learning in the classroom. Northside ISD reported 191 student and 161 staff cumulative cases in the state’s last report for the week ending on Nov. 15. Staff cases went from 17 new cases in the Nov. 1-8 report to 44 new staff cases from Nov. 8-15. The state failed to add the district’s data for Nov. 8, but the NEISD website shows 15 new student cases and 17 new staff cases. The district reported 183 student cases and 49 staff cumulative cases on Nov. 15. NEISD reported 15 new student cases and 17 new staff cases for this period.
