Local officials tour shelter for unaccompanied migrant children at Freeman Coliseum
SAN ANTONIO โ U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Bexar County Precinct 1 Commissioner Becky Clay-Flores and San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg toured a shelter for unaccompanied migrant children at Freeman Coliseum on Tuesday afternoon. The tour was held less than 24 hours after buses with about 500 migrant children who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border arrived at the Freeman Coliseum Expo Center. The group wanted to visit the facility to make sure the children were being given the proper housing and support. The U.S, Department of Health and Human Services is working to make sure the unaccompanied children are unified with their families or put with suitable sponsors in the U.S. Bexar County Precinct 1 Commissioner Becky Clay-Flores and San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg appear at a news conference after touring a shelter for unaccompanied migrant children at Freeman Coliseum on Tuesday afternoon.
500 unaccompanied migrant minors arrive at Freeman Coliseum expo center
SAN ANTONIO โ Buses filled with hundreds of migrant children who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border arrived at the Freeman Coliseumโs expo center Monday night. Roughly 500 children are now sheltered at the facility, which is expected to house as many as 2,400. The intake site is providing standards of care for the children, which includes clean and comfortable sleeping quarters, meals, recreational activities and access to medical services. AdVolunteers worked all weekend to help set up the facility and to make sure they have things like clothing and hygiene products. Wolff along with Congressman Joaquin Castro and Commissioner Rebecca Clay Flores, are expected to tour the facility later on Tuesday.
Up to 2,400 migrant children will be temporarily housed at Freeman Coliseum, county leaders say
SAN ANTONIO โ Bexar County leaders have entered a deal with the federal government to provide temporary shelter at Freeman Coliseum to migrant children who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border without an adult family member. As many as 2,400 unaccompanied migrant children will be housed at the expo halls at Freeman Coliseum starting next week, Wolff said. The county charged HHS the โstandard rateโ to rent the building and officials said the county would be reimbursed for any other costs incurred. The children will be tested for COVID-19 before coming to the Freeman Coliseum and then will be tested every five days while theyโre here, Wolff said. The Pentagon announced on Wednesday that Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland would also be used to house unaccompanied migrant children, but Wolff said Lackland would not facilitate as many children as Freeman will.

It is not a permanent solution.โItโs unclear yet how many children would be brought to Freeman Coliseum. However, on Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service also inquired about using JBSA-Lackland to house the minors for a period of time. โLook, what is happening on the border, as we have seen before, is just an incredible human tragedy,โ Nirenberg said. Obviously, if the county requested assistance from the city, we would be providing that.โWolff said he expects a decision about Freeman Coliseum in the next two to three days.
Miss Rodeo Texas makes history, keeps crown for 2nd year due to pandemic
SAN ANTONIO โ Miss Rodeo Texas Jordan Maldonado is making a historic trip back to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual competition to crown a new Miss Rodeo Texas was canceled. The cancellation means Maldonado gets to keeps her sash, buckle and hat and ride into the Freeman Coliseum to perform her rodeo duties for a history-making second year in a row. AdSince then, Maldonado has been able to appear at a few smaller rodeos, but San Antonio by far is her biggest event since the pandemic started. Maldonado said she is excited to be a part of rodeo this year since it will be held at the Freeman Coliseum.

Bexar County Commissioners consider COVID-19 testing for SA Stock Show and Rodeo
SAN ANTONIO โ Bexar County commissioners are considering paying to test San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo attendees for COVID-19, but rodeo organizers arenโt interested. Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert raised the idea of testing rodeo attendees with the county footing the bill during Tuesdayโs Bexar County Commissioners Court meeting. The commissioners are next scheduled to meet on Feb. 9 -- two days before the start of the rodeo. However, Sides said rapid testing for entry was โnot only financially but logistically a challenge for us. The Rodeo is a County event in a County facility, so operational decisions are up to the County.โ
About 90 people receiving antibody therapy for COVID-19 per day at Freeman Coliseum

Bexar County shatters summer record for COVID-19 hospitalizations

It jumped to the larger AT&T Center the following year.Collier said rodeo staff โworked extremely close with local health officialsโ to create a safety and sanitation plan. San Antonio again tops 1,000 COVID-19 cases as mayor warns numbers will continue to rise

According to a press release, the show combines puppetry, theater, dance and technology with holiday favorites. โA Very Electric Christmasโ is a story about a young bird and his family that are traveling south for the winter but the young bird gets thrown off course and ends up at the North Pole. Tickets to the event are socially distanced and are sold in pods of four and six. Other safety protocols that are in place according to the Freeman Coliseum include reduced capacity, temperature checks upon entry and masks must be worn at all times unless seated.
San Antonio area's COVID-19 positivity rate continues to climb, hitting 8.4% on Monday

After dipping below 5% in early October, local positivity rates have risen almost weekly.Public health officials set a positivity rate of 5% or lower as a benchmark to show the virus is under control. The positivity rate is the percentage of locally administered coronavirus tests that come back positive.On Monday, the county also recorded 417 new COVID-19 cases but no new deaths. The seven-day moving average of cases now stands at 234.Currently, 294 people are in local hospitals to treat coronavirus infections.

SAN ANTONIO โ The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has announced that it will take place in 2021 despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a press release said Thursday. The rodeo will take place Feb. 11-28 at the Freeman Coliseum. The rodeo was previously held at the coliseum from 1950 to 2003 when the SBC Center (now AT&T Center) was built. A press release said they will continue to host exhibitors from throughout the state to compete in agriculture events and will continue to try to educate the youth of Texas. The carnival is also returning for patrons to enjoy, the press release said.

On Oct. 30 and 31, the EDM Drive-In, Volume 2, will call Virtual Riot, Etc! To adhere to social distancing guidelines, venues and promoters have switched to the drive-in experience for movie showings, concerts and performances. This summer, the EDM Drive-In made its debut at the Freeman Coliseum, with towers set up so Bexar County Sheriffโs Office deputies could monitor at a safe distance and officers patrolling the grounds.

The injections are available to those with or without medical insurance.Participants will need to register and schedule an appointment online , however.The drive-thru clinic will run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Popular Tejano/Norteo band Intocable to perform live drive-in concert in San Antonio this weekend
SAN ANTONIO On Sunday, Intocable will be back in San Antonio for a live drive-in concert in the Freeman Coliseum parking lot. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, band members say they have been forced to try out new things. After seeing a band in Europe perform a live drive-in concert, singer Ricky Muoz threw the idea out to the other members of the band and their manager. The drive-in tour was a hit but in early July the coronavirus hit the band. Thats the city that signed us and its very important to the industry of Tejano music, Muoz said.

It will then pass by the Fire Marshals Office at 9120 Southton Road, the city and county emergency operations center and the Bexar County Courthouse while en route to the coliseum. Coleman served as the Bexar County emergency management coordinator up until the time of his death. Before that, he served as a Bexar County Sheriffs Office deputy.
Bexar County officials defend horse auction scheduled for next week at Freeman Coliseum
SAN ANTONIO County officials on Friday defended a horse auction at the Freeman Coliseum scheduled for next week that will move forward despite an ongoing surge of COVID-19 cases in San Antonio and restrictions on large gatherings. The Texas Quarter Horse Association Annual Yearling Sale is scheduled for July 24-25, inside expo hall B, according to a description of the event on the associations website. According to Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolffs latest executive order, updated Wednesday, public gatherings in excess of 10 people are prohibited in Bexar County. Given the capacity of the building and the size of these animals and their pens, social distancing is not anticipated to be an issue. A portion of expo hall is also being on standby as a makeshift hospital.
Coronavirus Testing Sites in Texas Cities Are Disproportionately Located in White Neighborhoods

The location of sites in El Paso, Austin and Fort Worth are similarly skewed, according to NPR's analysis.San Antonio had 18 testing sites in locations that are whiter than the city's median and 17 in less-white census tracts. Houston, meanwhile, had 18 testing sites in neighborhoods of color, compared to 13 in predominantly white areas.The analysis comes as mounting evidence suggests black and Latino communities suffer greater health consequences from the pandemic. "Whereas there's this whole pool of infections that you haven't seen."

The city of San Antonio will begin testing asymptomatic people for COVID-19, dropping previous restrictions that required residents to have a fever, dry cough or other symptoms to qualify.Asymptomatic people can be tested for free at local health care providers, drive-thru locations and through the San Antonio Fire Departments Mobile Integrated Healthcare Program, according to a news release.It is important for the uninsured residents to know they also have access to testing at no charge and have resources to make sure they are healthy and are aware of services that are available in our city, Metro Health Director Dawn Emerick said in a written statement.Metro Health said medical professionals should use their judgment whether a patient faced potential exposure to COVID-19 and should be tested. The agency noted that not all people infected with the coronavirus display symptoms.San Antonio's expansion comes at Texas works to ramp up testing availability.The Lone Star State has one of the lowest per-capita testing rates. A little more than 500,000 Texans, or less than 2% of the population, have so far been tested for the disease, according to the COVID Tracking Project.

Just 28% said they're more concerned with continued economic damage from those policies.The poll was conducted from April 16 to April 20, about a week before Texas Gov. Just 31% said they think the worst is over.FM3 Research conducted the poll both online and via phone. KSAT News and the Rivard Report partnered on the project.

Local officials said those restrictions came from the federal agencies providing the tests. San Antonio also has not come anywhere close to the kinds of hospital bed shortages seen in other areas.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths in Bexar County has reached 30, nearly half of which are linked to a nursing home at the center of an outbreak , Mayor Ron Nirenberg announced Sunday evening.One of the three new deaths reported since Saturday is a resident of Southeast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where a total of 15 residents have now succumbed to the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus.On Sunday, local health officials also confirmed 772 positive cases of COVID-19. That total marks an increase of 49 cases since Saturday.Close contact with an infected person was the most common cause of local contagion, accounting for 37% of local cases. Another 32% were through community spread, meaning it's unclear how the sick person contracted the disease.Health experts warn that a growing number of community-spread cases signifies a greater risk to the public than when contagion is largely through travel or close contact.As of Wednesday evening, Metro Health had tested 4,338 people for COVID-19.
