BOERNE, Texas – Veteran-owned small businesses in Boerne can get a helping hand from a new non-profit. The Task Force VOSBO, or Veteran-owned Small Business Organization has a mission to promote local businesses and provide educational opportunities for its members. Mark Sierra, owner and chef of Compadres Hill Country Cocina in Boerne, serves as the Task Force VOSBO’s president. “(Through Task Force VOSBO) we can help promote (small businesses), try to come up with resources for startups… (and) for existing veteran-owned businesses to get their name out a little bit more, just so we can help one another,” Sierra said. “We’re here to, you know, take you out of your comfort zone… We always encourage veterans to lead, right because that’s what (Task Force VOSBO) is all about.”AdApplications to join Task Force VOSBO are now being accepted.

Hill Country power outages pass two weeks, some could be out into a third

AdThe original rain and ice storm that began on Thursday, Feb. 11, knocked out power to 10,000 to 12,000 meters, Loth estimated. At its peak, Loth said, about 35,000 of 43,000 CTEC meters had no power. By Sunday, Feb. 21, Loth said CTEC was in its “rebuild” stage, meaning it couldn’t restore power without rebuilding something. AdThe downed power lines and poles are in hard-to-reach places, too, with bulldozers sometimes required to pull the trucks where they’re needed. Every mile of CTEC’s rural power lines serves just a handful of power meters.

SAN ANTONIO You could find buried treasure in the Texas Hill Country -- an estimated $340 million worth. Texas is estimated to have $340 million in buried treasure, more than any other state in the U.S., according to TexasHillCountry.com. Bass is also tied to legends of treasure buried treasure in Burnet and Llano counties as well as Packsaddle Mountain, Lone Star Treasure reports. According to TexasHillCountry.com, legend says theres close to $3 million buried near where Shoal Creek empties into the Colorado River. Distilleries, wineries and even some restaurants with high alcohol sales say they are unfairly being caught in the crossfire of the statewide bar shutdown. Abbotts order required any business that gets 51% or more of its revenue from alcohol sales to close. RestaurantsThe bar shutdown has also closed many restaurants that have high alcohol sales, industry experts said. Because its revenue generated from alcohol sales outpaces food sales, the ice house was also forced to close down. She said she doesnt think the bar shutdown was intended to target a business like hers.
