A 52-year-old man died Wednesday in a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 281 in Edinburg. The police department responded to the 7100 block of north Expressway 281 at 2 p.m. Wednesday in reference to a major crash. “The driver of the silver F-250 then struck two tractors on the side of the road and rolled over,” the release stated. The driver of the silver F-250 pickup truck was taken to DHR Health, where he died. The driver of the white F-250 pickup truck, a 39-year-old man, was taken to DHR with non life-threatening injuries.myrgv.com
Feds: Toddler in vehicle during cocaine trafficking attempt in Edinburg
Federal authorities say a woman had a toddler in her vehicle when Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies discovered more than 12 pounds of cocaine hidden inside that vehicle after a traffic stop on Highway 281. “Lugo was accompanied by a dog in the front passenger seat and a toddler in the back seat of the vehicle,” the complaint stated. During the traffic stop, a drug-sniffing dog alerted to the presence of drugs in the blue 2017 Volkswagon Tiguan she was driving, according to the complaint. “Upon subsequent search of the vehicle, packages were discovered under a dog bed on top of the front passenger seat and also in the rear panel of the vehicle,” the complaint stated. “Lugo stated that ‘I don’t know what drug it is, but I know it’s a narcotic.’ Lugo also stated that she was to be paid $3,000 after delivering the packages to San Antonio,” the complaint stated.myrgv.com
SAPD: Man extracted from vehicle after rollover crash on Highway 281
SAN ANTONIO – A man in his 30s had to be extracted from his vehicle after he crashed on the city’s North Side early Wednesday morning, San Antonio police said. The crash happened around 2 a.m. on Highway 281 North near Hildebrand, just under the University of Incarnate Word sky bridge. According to police, the man was traveling northbound when, for an unknown reason, he lost control of his vehicle and rolled over. The San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department and EMS all answered the call. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Officers said the woman, who has not been identified, was found lying unresponsive in the middle of a northbound lane in the 27600 block of U.S. 281 North. A witness said they did not see the woman get hit by a vehicle, and another witness said he stopped his 18-wheeler to block traffic from hitting her. It is unclear where the woman was hit, as there was no road evidence, police said. It is also unclear what type of vehicle hit her.
4-vehicle crash on Highway 281 South sends at least 1 person to hospital
SAN ANTONIO – Four vehicles were involved in a collision on Highway 281 South that sent at least one person to an area hospital late Sunday night. The crash happened around 11:40 p.m. in the 16200 block of Highway 281 South on the city’s South Side, not far from Guest Road. According to witnesses, a truck hit a black cow in the middle of the highway, causing a red sedan to roll over and two other vehicles to crash as well. Residents in South Bexar County neighborhood forced to take cover as bullets zing by them from nearby property
Residents point to the 281 Country Club next door as the source of those bullets. The 20-acre property is advertised online as an outdoor recreational area for ATVs and bicycles, and it has a shooting range. Jorge Trevino is one of about 20 people who own 281 Country Club. In November 2020, deputies noted a complaint of automatic weapon gunshots to a man named Jorge, who said he owned the 281 Country Club. Trevino says the country club has been operating for about a year, and there’s a five-year plan to expand the business.

SAN ANTONIO – There are many things we wish to say good-bye to in 2020, but road construction is here to stay. Major progress is expected on the U.S. Highway 281 project in northern Bexar County. The final set of new on-ramps between Loop 1604 and Highway 281 are expected to open in January. And the region’s second set of HOV lanes, on Highway 281 between Stone Oak Parkway and Loop 1604, are projected to open later in the year. While that project is making progress, another project in San Antonio will just be getting started.

BEXAR COUNTY – The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle on Highway 281 late Tuesday night. The crash happened around 9 p.m. in the 24500 block of Highway 281 South near Mogford Road in South Bexar County. The medical examiner’s office on Thursday identified the man as 58-year-old Jesse Flores. The sheriff’s office did say when found, the driver of the vehicle will be charged with failure to stop and render aid.

Driver, car sprayed with bullets on North Side highway
SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are trying to find out who sprayed a car and its driver with gunfire on a North Side highway. They say a passerby noticed the car pulled over to the side of the road on Highway 281 near Nakoma late Tuesday night. When officers arrived around 11:45 p.m. they found the driver inside, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police said the car had at least 20 bullet holes. They say they had received several calls about gunshots in the area shortly before getting the call about the wounded man in the car.

SAN ANTONIO – A man is hospitalized and in critical condition after firefighters had to extract him from his vehicle following a rollover crash on Highway 281, according to San Antonio police. According to police, a pickup truck was driving erratically on the northbound lanes of Highway 281 when the driver lost control as he was trying to exit. SAN ANTONIO – Two people were hospitalized and one person is in custody following a 5-vehicle collision on Highway 281 late Wednesday night, San Antonio police said. The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Highway 281 southbound between Thousand Oaks and Brook Hollow. One of the drivers in the crash was taken into custody for a possible DWI, police said. The southbound lanes of Highway 281 were closed for a few hours as emergency crews worked at the scene. Police said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Luby’s restaurant on San Antonio’s North Side reopens for first time since March
SAN ANTONIO – After being closed for six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a North Side Luby’s restaurant reopened Monday. The Luby’s on Highway 281 near Bitters closed in mid-March after San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg ordered dining rooms in the city to close. While the orders allowed for take out and drive-thru services, the Luby’s location closed entirely. A company spokesperson said the restaurant is now staffed to open its dining area and is also offering to-go, catering and third-party delivery. Driver, 26, killed in Loop 1604 accident that closed lanes for hours
SAN ANTONIO – A 26-year-old man was killed in an accident along Loop 1604 on the North Side Wednesday morning. San Antonio police responded to the wreck around 6 a.m. on the westbound lanes of Loop 1604 near Stone Oak Parkway before Highway 281. The driver lost control and crashed into the other vehicles, causing a chain reaction, police said. The westbound lanes of Loop 1604 were closed during the investigation, but have since reopened, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. Motorcyclist injured in crash with vehicle on South Side, police say
SAN ANTONIO A motorcyclist is hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle head-on overnight, San Antonio police said. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. near Del Lago Parkway and Highway 281 south on the citys South Side. Thats when, police say, right before entering the parking lot the driver changed their mind, and hit the motorcycle head-on. Police said the motorcyclist had a helmet on, but broke his arms and had several other injuries. The driver of the vehicle was not injured, but is now being evaluated for DWI, police said.
New flyover ramps opening this weekend expected to reduce traffic in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO Two new flyover ramps at Highway 281 and Loop 1604 will open this weekend as part of Texas Department of Transportations expansion project. The opening of the new flyover ramps marks a major milestone of the US-281 expansion project, said TxDOT District Engineer Mario Jorge. The expansion project was meant to reduce congestion along an eight-mile stretch of Highway 281 between Loop 1604 and Borgfeld Drive. The expansion project will bring much-needed relief to the 91,000 drivers that travel on the corridor each day, said Jorge. Once complete, this project will reduce motorist delays by 660,000 hours every year.The first segment of the expansion project, which began in 2017, is scheduled for completion in 2021.
San Antonio drivers will get a chance to bypass traffic on I-10, Highway 281 with new HOV lanes
That HOV lane will be extended by 2023 from north of Stone Oak Parkway to Borgfeld Road, the release states. The stretch of HOV lane on I-10 W will be five miles, phase one of the Highway 281 HOV lanes will be three miles and phase two on Highway 281 will be six miles. HOV lanes are designated lanes along a highway that are reserved for the following vehicles:Vehicles carrying 2 or more peopleBusesMotorcyclesVIA and marked vehiclesTrailer towing is prohibited in HOV lanes. The opening of HOV lanes is a culmination of several years of community engagement, planning and construction, said TxDOT San Antonio district engineer Mario Jorge. SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio woman is warning others after she says a man tried to abduct her at Target off TPC Parkway and Highway 281 in Stone Oak. Maria Rios said the alleged abduction attempt took place at 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a police report she filed with the San Antonio Police Department. Rios shared her story on Facebook Tuesday saying a man in a black BMW tried to act like he knew her and get into her car. Rios was escorted to her car by a Target manager after notifying employees of the incident. CPS Energy to close stretch of Highway 281 Sunday
SAN ANTONIO - CPS Energy crews will close a stretch of Highway 281 on Sunday while they work to remove deenergized electric lines in the area. The work will take place between Summer Glen and Ramblewood Drive between 6:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sunday. Traffic could be stopped for 15 to 20 minutes during each rolling roadblock. Firefighters battle massive trailer fire in South Bexar County
SAN ANTONIO – Area firefighters battled a massive trailer fire in South Bexar County overnight, the Bexar County Sheriff's office said. The fire was called in just before 2 a.m. at a home in the 350 block of Hallmark Path, not far from Highway 281 and Pleasanton Road and just south of Loop 1604. Emergency responders said they arrived to find the trailer fully-involved. The Bexar County Fire Department said they were cautious with the fire because part of the structure collapsed.
