It was when my mother got sick from emphysema that I saw the tides turn, and my family had no choice but to seek medical care. After mother died, dad went to the doctor somewhat for diabetes care, but definitely not regularly. I needed to honor his wishes; in no way did he want to be kept alive on life support. He knew that when a loved one is sick and cant manage for themselves, there needs to be a person advocating on their behalf even with a medical doctors care. One month into his stay, on a sunny Saturday afternoon, when my sister and I were at Dads apartment packing his belongings, my dad went into respiratory failure.
