San Antonio ISD offering free testing to students, staff this weekend
SAN ANTONIO โ The San Antonio Independent School District is offering free COVID-19 testing to students, staff, and household members this weekend. The testing event is happening Saturday, March 20, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Alamo Convocation Center on Tuleta Drive. The testing is in anticipation of students and staff returning from a two-week break on Tuesday. Test results will be provided within 24 hours.

SAN ANTONIO โ San Antonio Independent School District teachers and staff members received Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccines on Tuesday morning. The clinic, STAAMP Allergy, administered 100 doses of the new COVID-19 vaccine, which received emergency use authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Feb. 27. โWith the Johnson and Johnson (vaccine), thereโs 100% protection rate from death in the studies. He hopes all staff members can get vaccinated. San Antonio ISD employees say they are thankful for the opportunity to get a vaccine.
San Antonio-area school districts look to offer African-American studies course
SAN ANTONIO โ An African American studies course is gradually being incorporated into school districts across the state. Districts that are already on board include the San Antonio Independent School District, Judson Independent School District and most recently, the North East Independent School District. Lawrence Scott, assistant professor of educational leadership at Texas A&M San Antonio, was a part of that initiative. โWe have to start having some real cogent and critical conversations about race and equity with real data,โ Scott said. This will be the conduit course that will facilitate those conversations,โ he said.

Family of fallen SAISD officer raising money for scholarship
SAN ANTONIO โ The family of a San Antonio Independent School District officer who was killed more than one year ago is continuing his legacy by raising money for a scholarship. The Cliff Martinez Memorial Scholarship for SAISD students honors the detective who worked in the districtโs police department for 28 years. It was created after his death for students enrolled in police explorer programs and pursuing a career as a police officer. His family is hoping to raise funds for the scholarship by raffling off a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro on Feb. 21. Albert Martinez, the father of Cliff Martinez, told KSAT that they are hoping to raise $100,000.

Superintendent Pedro Martinez says the San Antonio Independent School District is โvery strictโ about quarantining both staff and students in the case of possible COVID-19 exposures. So far, there have been two rounds of federal relief funding โ the CARES Act in March 2020 and the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSA) in December. None of the poverty funding, none of the special-ed funding, none of those extra funds for children who have extra needs, has ever been held harmless.โThe Texas Education Agency says that all Texas school districts were fully funded for the 2019-2020 school year.
San Antonio ISD officials will phase-in more students to in-person learning beginning on Feb. 22
SAN ANTONIO โ San Antonio Independent School District officials announced on Monday that the district will begin to phase-in students to in-person classes beginning on Feb. 22. Officials say their decision to announce the phase-in stemmed from city and county officials announcing that the local positivity rate dropped below 10%. Pedro Martinez, superintendent of schools for SAISD, said the districtโs phase-in will depend on the community staying below 10%. โAs long as our local positivity rate remains in single digits, we will continue a gradual return of students,โ Martinez said in a statement. Additionally, according to the district, families of returning students will also be allowed to have their children participate in the weekly COVID-19 testing on each of the districtโs campuses before resuming in-person learning.
Edison High School cancels next two football games due to COVID-19 concerns, athletics officials say
SAN ANTONIO โ The Edison High School Golden Bears have canceled their next two games due to concerns over COVID-19 and contact tracing, according to San Antonio Independent School District athletics officials. The announcement was made by SAISD Athletics on its social media account Wednesday night. The teamโs games scheduled for this Friday, Nov. 20, against Memorial High School and next Friday, Nov. 27, against Brackenridge High School were canceled. The Golden Bears had gone 1-2 in their first three games and 0-2 in Zone A in District 13-5A Division I, and as a result, that knocks Edison out of playoff contention. All SAISD schools had to switch to zone play this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic after becoming the last school district to start playing on Oct. 27.

โHistoricโ $1.3 billion bond approved in SAISD for campus renovations, technology upgrades
SAN ANTONIO โ Voters in the San Antonio Independent School District overwhelmingly approved two propositions that will bring technology upgrades and significant renovations to aging campuses. In the Nov. 3 election, Proposition A, a $1.21 billion bond that will allow renovations at 36 campuses was approved with 68.46% of voters in favor of the bond. The district said 21 of those campuses have not received a full renovation in more than 50 years. That $90 million measure will supply classrooms with more efficient technology like high-speed internet, individual devices, interactive smartboards and audio systems. Rick Flores, the principal of Rhodes Middle School, told KSAT in October that the bond will bring facilities up to code.

The last time Rhodes Middle School had a renovation was in the 1980s for a new air conditioning system, which also needs to be replaced. โThe challenge is when we have a fully-staffed students here.โProposition A, if approved, would provide $1.21 billion for security upgrades to all schools. The $90 million plan, if approved, would bring technology upgrades to every school in the district. Interest rates at all-time lows: With interest rates at an all-time low, SAISD will pay less interest on the bonds.

SAN ANTONIO The San Antonio Independent School District has delayed all in-person athletics until the first week of October, sources told KSAT-12 early Tuesday morning. The district issued a statement Tuesday afternoon that read:At this time, SAISD Athletics will remain 100% virtual due to the uncertain COVID-19 circumstances in and around Bexar County. SAISD will push its start dates back to early October, but district officials indicated the start date could be sooner if COVID-19 conditions in Bexar County continue to improve. Memorial and Kennedys football teams compete in the same district with SAISD schools. YMLA is a 4A school that has not been allowed to start practice due to the current schools mandate in Bexar County.

Edison High School student lifts shirt up, makes sexual advances at teacher during virtual class
SAN ANTONIO โ Some Edison High School students were witnesses to a disturbing incident during a virtual art class Tuesday. And I know he was upset,โ said Mariana Rodriguez, whose son, Eduardo Corpus, was in the virtual class and witnessed the incident that he says involved several students. โThey were pulling their shirts off and saying, like, really disgusting stuff to the teacher, making her feel uncomfortable,โ Corpus said. Rodriguez said she understands that it may be hard for kids to stay focused during a virtual class.
What happens if a teacher or student dies of COVID? San Antonio school districts share their plans
Two San Antonio Independent School District teachers and the cafeteria manager at a Northside Independent School District campus all passed away within weeks of each other this summer due to complications from COVID-19. In response to the deaths of the three women, KSAT reached out to the school districts in the San Antonio area to see if there are plans in place in the event that a teacher or student dies of COVID-19 during the school year. The replies were similar, with every district spokesperson who responded stating that districts would follow the same procedure already in place for any student or teacher death. East Central Independent School District spokesperson Brandon Oliver said the district also provides follow-up care for those most affected. TEA knows that every district already has established processes in the Emergency Operations Plans to respond to the death of a student or staff member, Pawlik-Perales said.

SAN ANTONIO This incoming school year will be unlike any other in wake of the coronavirus pandemic, and the San Antonio Independent School District has one more reminder to for all students and staff: Face coverings will be required for all. The school district posted Friday on Facebook, reminding families that it will be providing face coverings appropriate for each grade level. Clear face masks will also be provided to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and parents can use different masks for their children if they choose, the school district says. Harlandale ISD considering 100% virtual instruction, pushing back school start date
SAN ANTONIO โ As coronavirus cases continue to swelter in Texas along with the heat, some San Antonio school districts are starting to propose revisions to the already cloudy 2020-2021 school year. In a letter to parents Tuesday, Harlandale ISD Superintendent Gerardo Soto said the district is considering changing the start date for the upcoming school year from Aug. 5 to Aug. 24. Harlandale had the earliest tentative school start date for all the San Antonio-area school districts, according to a previous KSAT report. During a news briefing Tuesday, SAISD Superintendent Pedro Martinez announced in-person instruction will become available for students after Labor Day and the start date for SAISD will be pushed back one week, pending board approval. Last week, the TEA issued guidance for school districts as the state continues to see an alarming increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

SAN ANTONIO The Texas State Teachers Association is urging state officials to slow down the reopening of campuses, as back to school season is just around the corner. With districts considering a wide array of options for the upcoming school year, the Texas State Teachers Association President Noel Candelaria says schools must reopen with caution to prevent another spike in COVID-19 cases. At the end of June, local school districts were still locking down calendars for the 2020-21 school year. Candelaria has said no school campuses should reopen until the pandemic begins to subside. David Donjuan, 25, is charged with murder in the slaying of Amy Seabron. Police said the shooting happened Feb. 1 at the Parc at Wall Street Apartments.
