FLORESVILLE, Texas – A veterans home in Floresville has been dealing with another COVID-19 outbreak that has so far infected 40 residents and 14 staff members, according to the Texas General Land Office, the state agency that oversees the facility. The Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home in Floresville is testing its residents and staff on a weekly basis, and cases have started to climb. The veterans home reported another outbreak in April 2020, soon after the beginning of the pandemic. Dozens of hospitals, urgent care clinics and H-E-B pharmacies in Bexar County are slated to receive 30,200 doses of the Moderna vaccine this week. Made by Moderna, the vaccine requires two doses like the already approved Pfizer vaccine. The Moderna vaccine was endorsed by a government advisory panel on Thursday in a 20-0 vote. Some rural areas that had been waiting for word on when they would receive shipments will be included in week 2, data shows. Last week, nearly 30,000 doses of the Pfizer-made vaccine were shipped to San Antonio-area hospitals and military bases.

More than half of the residents at Prairie Meadows Rehabilitation Center in Floresville have tested positive for COVID-19. A spokesperson for the nursing home confirmed on Monday that 26 of the 48 residents were infected. We tested all residents and staff on June 3 and at that time everyone was negative, spokesperson Joe Gimenez said. Our goals are to manage risk and to enhance recovery, Gimenez said. The following protocols have worked at other facilities and will work at Prairie Meadows.Residents will be closely monitored and the staff will utilize telemedecine from physicians to assist in the recovery effort.

WILSON COUNTY, Texas A board member of the Floresville Independent School District is wanted on multiple misdemeanor charges in Wilson County after investigators said she and two other people stole a donkey from a pasture west of Floresville. Alena Berlanga, 49, will face charges of theft $100-$750 and criminal trespassing after she turns herself in or is taken into custody. A Wilson County Sheriffs investigator told KSAT 12 Wednesday that two other suspects wanted in connection to the case, Nicole Sullivan and Pamela Johnson, were working on arrangements to turn themselves in. The donkey was taken to a ranch in Wilson County but the foal did not survive the birth, the investigator said. A Floresville ISD spokesperson and Berlanga did not respond to requests for comment Wednesday morning.

FLORESVILLE, Texas – The grandmother and legal guardian of three children who law enforcement officials found severely malnourished and neglected has been arrested, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt said. Samantha Foster is being held in the Wilson County Jail on three counts of endangerment to a child, Tackitt said. Records show Child Protective Services placed the 1-, 2- and 4-year-old children in Foster’s custody in April 2019. One of three kids at center of child abuse case in Wilson County released from hospitalThe children were found in the house last week severely malnourished and covered in feces, and were taken to the Children’s Hospital ICU in critical condition. A Wilson County sheriff’s investigator said last week it appears the man was no longer living there when they began investigating earlier this week.

SAN ANTONIO – More than 1,200 members of the Texas National Guard will fan out across the state and set up two dozen mobile COVID-19 testing sites, Governor Greg Abbott announced Monday. “The State of Texas continues to expand our COVID-19 testing capacities and ensure that communities across the Lone Star State have access to the resources they need,” said Abbott in an emailed statement. Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas National Guard will be mobilizing more than 1,200 personnel as part of COVID-19 mobile testing teams (MTT). “COVID-19 testing is a crucial mission in our fight against this virus,” said Maj. Gen. Tracy R. Norris, adjutant general of Texas, in an email statement. Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas National Guard will be mobilizing more than 1,200 personnel as part of COVID-19 mobile testing teams (MTT).

Floresville, TEXAS – On Thursday evening, Floresville City Council issued a mandate ordering all people three years and older to wear some form of covering over their nose and mouth in an effort to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. This mandate began at midnight on Friday and left some residents scrambling to find a mask or use items such as a scarf, bandana or handkerchief as an option. The city has a population of about 8,000 and sits 30 miles southeast of downtown San Antonio in Wilson County. Floresville, TEXAS – Every day Jimmy Gonzales visits his wife Isabel at Regency Manor in Floresville. Isabel Gonzales has been in the nursing home rehabbing a fractured femur. Last week, most nursing homes started prohibiting visitors due to COVID-19 concerns. Wilson County News says the Floresville Residence and Rehabilitation Center and Regency Manor Nursing & Rehab Center have closed their doors to visitors and have increased its cleaning and sanitizing efforts due to coronavirus concerns. Visitors, whether they are family members or friends, are not allowed at either of these facilities unless it’s considered a special circumstance, according to WCN’s report.

SAN ANTONIO – A man who told deputies “y’all are just gonna have to shoot me” was fatally shot outside a Floresville Walmart overnight. Officials received a call about the man, identified as Stephen O’Brien, 20, walking near a car around 12:15 a.m. Monday at the store in the 300 block of 10th St., according to Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt. When deputies approached him, the man told them “y’all are just gonna have to shoot me," Tackitt said. The man suddenly jerked his hands out of his pockets, Tackitt said, and two deputies and a DPS trooper opened fire, thinking he had a weapon.

Floresville – The City of Floresville was able to move forward with city business Thursday after the Fourth Court of Appeals issued a stay in a lawsuit involving its election dispute. The lawsuit challenges the legality of the city council’s decision to move city elections from November 2019 to May 2020. The mayor and three candidates who were running for city council filed the lawsuit, saying the decision was not made legally. FLORESVILLE, Texas – Jesse Christopher “Chris” Flores died from acute promyelocytic leukemia on Jan. 21, nine days after getting misdiagnosed with the flu, according to his widow, Joyce Flores. “When he went to the doctor they did not swab him for the flu. They said, ‘Based on your symptoms and how long you’ve had it, you probably have the flu,’” said Joyce. Chris’s first wife, Debbie, died around 10 years ago after contracting the swine flu. Jan. 21, the day Chris died, would have been his 25th wedding anniversary with his first wife.

FLORESVILLE, Texas – The daughter of a Floresville councilman who was killed last week in a two-vehicle accident in Wilson County will fill her father’s seat. Jade Jimenez will take over the Place 4 seat for Gerard Jimenez. Councilwoman Marissa Ximenez said the appointment was made after a unanimous vote. FLORESVILLE, Texas – A recent increase in car break-ins has Floresville police concerned. “To me, it was shocking because it doesn’t happen in this community,” said Detective George Ortiz, with the Floresville Police Department. Ortiz said crooks broke into 17 cars on Dec. 11 at the Northcrest Hills subdivision. “You’re giving a criminal an opportunity to take your belongings," Ortiz said. Clicker and his wife had left their cars unlocked and woke up to find several of their belongings gone.

FLORESVILLE, Texas – Police arrested Jeremy Saunders on Monday after finding him in possession of two stolen credit cards and approximately 80 pieces of mail from various residents in the Floresville area. Floresville Police Officer Reuben Garcia noticed a silver BMW at a local Exxon station that he believed matched the description of a vehicle involved in a string of recent mail theft incidents in the area.
