Laredo nonprofit steps up to feed thousands of families in need during COVID-19 pandemic
LAREDO, Texas โ Just like the familiar images of seemingly endless food lines in San Antonio, the twice-weekly distribution at Holding Institute Community Center in Laredo may be smaller, but the demand is still the same. Pastor Mike Smith said before the pandemic, the nonprofit helped under 100 families and now sees 250 to 300 families a week, representing several thousand within those households. Smith said the center has seen the face of poverty dramatically change, with many asking for help for the first-time. Embarrassed and unaware of how to go about it, Smith said he tells them, โIโll take your word for it. Before COVID-19 spread on both sides of the border, Smith said, โIt was fairly easy to get food into Mexico.
$62 million lost across arts and culture groups in San Antonio since pandemic
SAN ANTONIO โ The arts and culture groups in San Antonio are known for their vibrancy, but right now they are experiencing some of the biggest financial blows in our community from the pandemic. โThatโs a devastating number for the arts community in the US and that will also effect the arts and culture organizations in San Antonio,โ Riley Robinson, the director of Artpace San Antonio said. โWeโd like you to give and weโd like you to advocate for the arts organizations in San Antonio.โCAUSA is made up of places like the San Antonio Museum of Art, Ballet San Antonio and the Tobin Center. It has found that $62 million has been lost in the arts community since March. Thatโs a big loss, considering the group says $4.8 billion is generated by the groups in San Antonio annually.
Local 18-year-old donates 150 fleece blankets to children living in shelters
SAN ANTONIO โ Sam Sanchez was 12-years-old when she kick start her mission to provide children living in shelters with a sense of comfort. Six years later, Sanchez, the founder of Samโs Covers, has continued to create and donate fleece blankets to children living in emergency shelters. Sanchez said that after meeting with several of the children living at area shelters, sheโs hoping to help in another way. โTalking to them for a few hours and learning about their background, Itโs so important to listen and be present,โ Sanchez said. On Monday she donated 150 blankets for children living at Roy Maas Youth Alternatives Emergency Shelters and has no plans of stopping.
Spring will bring change of leadership at MOVE Texas
Next spring will see a change in leadership at MOVE Texas when its executive director, H. Drew Galloway, steps down after five years with the nonpartisan nonprofit grassroots organization. Galloway said MOVE Texas student organizers and their volunteers have registered 120,000 new young voters during the time heโs been with the organization. โThis organization is building a pipeline and building power all across the state,โ Galloway said. Galloway said heโll be staying on as executive director through the search and hiring process. โI canโt wait to see whatโs next for the Texas movement and for young people and for organizers all across the state,โ he said.
November shoe and sock drive to help adults living on the streets
SAN ANTONIO โ Check your closet and take a peek under your bed or couch to find those shoes you havenโt used in months or maybe even years. โWeโre now at five (volunteers).โThe first campaign was a shoe drive where more than 100 pairs of shoes were donated to those living on the streets of San Antonio. โThen, of course, thereโs the tattered shoes, thereโs the beaters, thereโs the laceless-shoes, the broken chanclas.โRamรญrez wants to help change that for several people struggling with homelessness. shoe and sock drive for the homeless image.
