Prosecutors pursue new charges against unlicensed Boerne doctor
A Kendall County woman accused of being an unlicensed doctor was arrested again Wednesday, facing new charges related to a years-long investigation into her clinic. Hunter was initially charged with three counts of practicing without a medical license in February 2019 after an investigation that first began in 2016. In a court hearing on Friday, the prosecutor indicated they will drop the previous charges against Hunter and instead pursue the fraud charges, which are state jail felonies. AdIn the past, Hunter would provide treatment to cancer patients, charging up to $1,700 for a single treatment session. The Defenders have been unable to determine what treatments Hunter is currently offering and whether she needs a state medical license to provide them.

Rural Texas residents drive the distance for COVID-19 vaccines
Boerne Mayor Tim Handren said Kendall County received about 1,200 vaccines in early January, but they were used quickly. AdHandren says the state seems to give preference to hospitals, and Kendall County doesn’t have one. It’s also about accessibility, and many in that community can drive to hubs like San Antonio for a vaccine. Kendall County will be receiving about 600 Moderna vaccines this week -- 400 for the city and 200 for the county. Yates says she got lucky taking a drive to San Antonio and getting a shot.

These San Antonio-area stores were the luckiest for Texas Lottery payouts in 2020
SAN ANTONIO – The chance to win the $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot has passed, but lottery fans have recently struck gold at several San Antonio-area stores. The data analyzed and visualized by KSAT below includes stores in Bexar, Comal, Kendall, Bandera, Medina, Atascosa, Wilson and Guadalupe counties that sold winning Texas Lottery tickets worth $600 or more last year. Records showed that three $5 million scratch-off tickets were sold in the last eight months. In June 2020 alone, NYS Food Mart at 4927 Rigsby Ave. and Roadster #18 at 8630 W. U.S. Highway 90 each sold scratch-off tickets worth that amount. It appears the NYS Food Mart is among the luckier stores in San Antonio, too: the store sold 17 winning scratch-off tickets total last year.

Hill County contractor accused of theft faces more family violence charges
La Salle County Sheriff’s officials have released limited details about the arrest but stated Wolfe used his hands, feet and teeth as weapons during the incident. Wolfe had been on bond since June, after his arrest in Jim Wells County on a felony family strangulation charge. In that case, sheriff’s department investigators arrested Wolfe days after they were called to a home in Orange Grove for a disturbance. A sergeant with the Gillespie County Sheriff’s Office told the Defenders in 2019 that he was, at one point, working seven criminal cases against Wolfe. The state attorney general’s office eventually took over the case because it had the resources to properly handle it, Gillespie County officials said.

New Buc-ee’s store in Boerne pushed back

Bexar County bars must close; restaurants, businesses decrease to 50% capacity per Gov. Abbott’s executive order
SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County officials announced Monday that the county’s businesses now operating at 75% capacity will have to cut back to 50% capacity and all bars must close due to a rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations in the region. SAN ANTONIO – The City of Boerne announced Tuesday that Ray Hacker was promoted to fire chief. Hacker, 57, has been serving as the interim fire chief since the retirement of the city’s long-time chief, Doug Meckle, in June. Hacker is from Boerne and graduated from Boerne High School, according to a statement from the city. City Manager Ben Thatcher said the city is excited to have Hacker in the role as both a pillar of the community and an experienced leader. The Backstory: Kendall County’s first elected district court judge reflects on past two years in office, plans for future
BOERNE, Texas – When former Kendall County Judge Kirsten Cohoon took her place as 451st District Court Judge in January 2018, she became the county’s first elected State District Court Judge, defeating an incumbent appointed by the governor. While creating the court, the Legislature eliminated several positions, including the county judge, leaving Cohoon with a challenging workload. “I really don’t think of that,” Cohoon said. “And I don’t think Kendall County does either.”In Kendall County, the district clerk’s office, county clerk’s office, district attorney’s office and four justice of the peace offices are all led by women, leaving Cohoon in good company. “I would like to see us work harder and be able to be back in court,” Cohoon said.

Kendall County Sheriffs Office to conduct joint training exercise with other area agencies Wednesday
Kendall County, Texas The Kendall County Sheriffs Office announced it will be conducting a large joint training exercise on Wednesday, Sept. 9. The training exercise will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the 1000 block of East Blanco Road. According to an announcement by the Sheriffs Office, residents, patrons and motorists will see an increase in law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services in the area during the training exercise. The Sheriffs Office said it will be partnering with neighboring agencies to conduct the training, so residents will see patrol vehicles from neighboring jurisdictions in the area as well. The Sheriffs Office said the training will end by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Kendall County district court judge conducting first live jury trial since COVID-19 outbreak
BOERNE, Texas – Testimony continued Tuesday in an assault trial in District Judge Kirsten Cohoon’s 431st District Court in Kendall County. There have been no live jury trials in the area since the COVID-19 outbreak in March, fearing an outbreak of the virus. Rangel said conducting live jury trials in Bexar County will depend solely on COVID-19 statistics. Rangel said he has no plans to conduct a live jury trial in Bexar County until at least October. The next live jury trial in Kendall County is scheduled for Oct. 5.

Carjacking suspect arrested in Kendall County following violent encounters with victims, law enforcement officers
But law enforcement authorities said Jerry Gardner, of Cedar Park, didn’t give up easily. Gardner was involved in a violent series of encounters, beginning at a gas station in Midland, where the carjacking occurred Friday night, the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office said. Gardner then struck a customer who tried to intervene in the carjacking before taking off on Interstate 10. Gardner then ran toward a Kendall County deputy and the suspect was shocked with a Taser, the KCSO said. After a brief struggle, he was arrested and taken to the Kerr County Jail, where he is being held on bonds from six charges totaling $528,500.

Federal lawsuit: Multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme targeted retired SAPD officers, other first responders
SAN ANTONIO – A Kendall County man swindled millions of dollars from retired San Antonio police officers and other first responders as part of a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme, according to a lawsuit filed this week by investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission. The lawsuit, which was first reported by the San Antonio Express-News, accuses 47-year-old Victor Lee Farias of carrying out the fraudulent investment scheme from 2013 through January of last year. Farias told investors their money would be spent on aircraft engines and other parts which would then be leased or resold to the major airlines, according to the lawsuit. Investors, many of whom were retired first responders, were promised a return on their investments of between 10-12 percent per year, the suit states. The suit claims Farias is 46, but a background check revealed that he is actually 47.

First COVID-19 death reported in Kendall County, officials say
KENDALL COUNTY, Texas The first COVID-19 related death in Kendall County was confirmed Friday by officials, according to county leaders. Kendall County Emergency Management posted about the death on Facebook, and said the patient that succumbed to the virus was a county resident who was isolated at home. Kendall County, Boerne update health declaration, adding mask requirement for large retailers
BOERNE, Tx Kendall County and The City of Boerne announced that they have updated their emergency health declaration by adding mask requirements for large retailers on Tuesday. According to a press release from The City of Boerne, Mayor Tim Handren and Kendall County Judge Darrel Lux signed an addendum to previous emergency health declarations. The addendum mandates that the countys largest retailers establish a Health and Safety Policy, which will require customers to wear facial coverings where social distancing cannot be maintained. Handren and Lux said, in a city press release, that they have communicated with management at all the impacted retailers and they have said they will abide by the declaration. As of June 30, the Texas Department of Health and Human Services has reported 66 cases of COVID-19 in Kendall County, Handren said the virus low impact will not stop local leaders from preventing an increase.

City of Boerne postpones general election from May to November
BOERNE, Texas – The city of Boerne has postponed the May 2020 general election for City Council District 3 due to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis. City officials said the general election has been postponed until Nov. 3. Greg Abbott issued a proclamation suspending certain provisions of the Texas Election Code and Texas Water Code to allow all local political subdivisions that are utilizing the May 2 uniform election date to postpone their election to the Nov. 3 uniform election date, city officials said. City officials said the District 3 council member currently holding office will continue to exercise the same duties until the council member takes his or her oath of office following the November uniform election. The unopposed council members for Districts 1 and 5 will take their oaths of office at the first city council meeting in May 2020, city officials said.

Boerne mayor adds restrictions with amendment to emergency declaration
BOERNE, Texas – Boerne Mayor Tim Handren on Monday amended the city’s public health emergency declaration to add more restrictions in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. According to a news release, Handren urges residents to stay home unless they are required to be at work providing essential services to the community. Essential services include law enforcement, medical services, banking services, food and supply services or essential communication services. The updated declaration will give public safety teams more enforcement ability. This is the third time the declaration has been amended and it comes as San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg is considering more restrictions for businesses, as well.

Driver killed in fiery crash on I-10 near Boerne, officials say
KENDALL COUNTY, Texas – A fiery crash near Boerne ended with one person dead on Friday afternoon, officials said. A video showed flames from the crash sparking a small brush fire around a vehicle. The Texas Department of Public Safety says the call for the crash came in just after noon. The driver veered off the road on I-10 near Mile Marker 540 by the Johns Road exit. The driver was the only person inside the car and has not been identified.

Kendall County woman served six 10-year prison sentences for spitting, biting officers
KENDALL COUNTY, Texas – A woman will serve six sentences of 10 years in prison concurrently for assaulting and spitting on three county officers, the Kendall County District Attorney’s Office said. Precious Labine was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to six charges, which included assault of a peace officer and harassment, the DA’s office said. Labine was driving a stolen pickup truck when she was pulled over, according to officials. While in the back of the police car, Labine started yelling, claiming she had AIDS, the DA’s office said. The DA’s office said she spat on the three officers.

Boerne softball coach accused of sexually assaulting 17-year-old player
A Boerne softball coach gave a 17-year-old girl alcohol and sexually assaulted her, according to Kendall County authorities. Danny C. Perez, 49, was charged with sexual assault on Nov. 25, 2019, Harris County court records show. Perez is the alleged victim’s coach, according to the news release. Affidavit: Bexar County deputy ‘sexually aroused’ during improper strip searchesOn Nov. 16, authorities said Perez sexually assaulted the girl at a Houston-area hotel.
