Woman hit, killed trying to cross access road of Loop 410, police say
SAN ANTONIO – A woman was hit and killed while attempting to cross an access road of Loop 410 on the city’s West Side late Monday night, San Antonio police said. The crash happened around 10:20 p.m. in the 6800 block of Northwest Loop 410 near Alamo Downs Parkway, not far from Culebra Road. The woman hit was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman killed has not been identified. The San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department and EMS all answered the call.
Medical Examiner identifies man hit, killed by pickup truck while trying to cross Culebra Road
SAN ANTONIO – Update:The Bexar County Medical Examiner has identified a man who was hit and killed by a pickup truck when he tried to run across Culebra Road Saturday night. The man was identified as 33-year-old Juan Meza, according to the ME’s Office. Police said Meza was trying to run across Culebra, from the south end to the north end, when he was hit by the pickup truck. WellMed administering 9,000 doses this week by appointment to residents in south, west San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO – Unlike the City of San Antonio’s mass vaccination clinic at the Alamodome, which required registration online or by calling 311, two other clinics on the South Side and West Side of San Antonio operated by using a toll-free number. WellMed -- in partnership with City Council Districts 3, 4 and 7 -- said that the toll-free number (833-968-1745) was quickly jammed as community members attempted to make an appointment. Rebecca Viagran, who represents District 3, said they received more than 170,000 phone calls from people who wanted one of the 9,000 doses available. “We know that 60% of the population of San Antonio fits in Phase 1B,” Viagran said. Van fire damages vacant mobile home, trailer just northwest of downtown
SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio firefighters responded to a fire on the near Northwest Side early Tuesday morning. The fire was called in around 5 a.m. in the 100 block of Albert Street, not far from Culebra Road and North Zarzamora Street. Firefighters said the fire appears to have started in a van and then spread to a vacant mobile home and trailer. They are worried sparks could catch the trailers that are nearby. According to the San Antonio Fire Department website, as many as 10 units answered the call.
Man, woman killed crossing San Antonio street
SAN ANTONIO - A man and woman were killed Wednesday evening while crossing busy Culebra Road on the West Side. The couple, believed to be in their late 50s, tried to cross in the 1400 block at about 6:30 p.m.. They made it across three lanes but were hit by a black Dodge Challenger, said Jennifer Rodriguez, a San Antonio Police Department spokeswoman. The driver tried to render aid and provided police information, Rodriguez said. Rodriguez encouraged pedestrians to always use a crosswalk – in this case, the nearest one was 100 feet away.

Bridge demolition causing major intersection, Loop 410 lane closures this week
SAN ANTONIO – A major intersection and a portion of Loop 410 will be closed Monday through Wednesday as crews with the Texas Department of Transportation demolish a bridge. Two main lanes of Loop 410 will be closed in both directions from Culebra Road to Ingram Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. during the demolition. The intersection at Loop 410 and Military Drive will also be closed while the bridge is demolished. TxDOT is asking motorists to seek an alternate route during the closures.
Police search for driver who crashed pickup truck into utility pole
SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are searching for a driver who crashed their pickup truck into utility pole late Thursday night. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. at the intersection of Vanley Drive and Culebra Road on the city’s West Side. According to police, a large pickup truck collided with a utility pole, breaking it completely off the base. Police said officers found serious damage to the windshield, but could not find the driver. Police did not say what charges the driver may face once they are located.
San Antonio family of man killed while crossing street demands change
SAN ANTONIO – The family of Juan Martinez says he died after he was hit by a car at North Zarazamora Street and Culebra Road last Wednesday. Martinez’s sister, Yolanda Betancourt, says her brother’s death should have never happened. He crossed Culebra Road while trying to get to the nearest bus pickup spot, which sits near the busy intersection near North Zarzamora Street. West Side laundromats putting new spin on digital literacy
SAN ANTONIO - Folks visiting two West Side laundromats can suds up a load of whites and log on while they wait, thanks to a program aimed at putting a new spin on digital literacy. The program is called the Wash and Learn Initiative, or WALI, by Libraries Without Borders, a nonprofit partnering with the San Antonio Library, BiblioTech and Google Fiber. "Most families spend about two hours in laundromats," said Adam Echelman, of Libraries Without Borders. According to the latest U.S. Census data, one in four San Antonio households lacks internet service. San Antonio is the first city in Texas to implement it.
Apartment behind West Side home a 'total loss' after fire
SAN ANTONIO - An unattached apartment behind a West Side home is said to be a total loss after a fire ripped through the structure early Friday morning. The fire was called in just after 2:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Paramount Avenue, not far from Culebra Road and North General McMullen Drive. Firefighters said they arrived to find both heavy smoke and flames showing. The backyard apartment was only being used for storage and had no one inside, fire officials said. Authorities say residents nearby are known to often burn debris in their backyard.

Wooden boards spill onto roadway in 18-wheeler rollover
SAN ANTONIO - Part of Interstate 10 near Culebra Road was shut down Wednesday afternoon after an overturned semitrailer's load of wooden boards spilled onto the highway. San Antonio police shared video of the rollover on the department's Facebook page around 2 p.m. In the video, wooden boards are seen strewn across the roadway. The Texas Department of Public Safety said that the main eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 at Interstate 35 are closed. Driver Flees Scene After Crashing Car Into West Side Bill Miller Bar-B-Q

A witness told officers that the car's driver had rammed into her SUV from behind.The witness said the impact caused the sedan to go out of control and drive through the Bill Miller parking lot and into the side of the building. It also displaced bricks and broke glass.The crash also caused the car to catch fire, though firefighters were able to put out the flames and prevent further damage. Since the restaurant was closed, there was no one inside the building. The witness who the suspect rammed was cleared by paramedics at the scene.The witness told police that the sedan driver fled the scene on foot following the crash Ahead of opening time, employees gathered at the restaurant to clean up the scene.
